The perfectionist drummer in me had to check in to confirm that the drums in "Whip It" are real (and spectacular). Also, gotta make a slight correction on the use of four on the floor. While the choruses of "Teen Spirit" certainly feature a steady 'four on the floor rhythm', the verses don't really. Think of every beat in a 4/4 measure having a kick drum on it, ie: "Heart of Glass" by Blondie or "Miss You" by the Rolling Stones. That's all.

I always felt new wave was ushered in with Gary Numan's "Cars" and, natch, The Cars' first couple records. Ever notice how many Best Of The 80's lists and comps those songs are on, yet they were released in - GASP! - the late seventies.

You might be on to something the Spice Girls, but like I said in my little blurb, Britney really ushered in a wave of, um, wannabes (sorry about the pun) who had more staying power.

That boom/crack/boom/crack/boom/crack intro is most certainly real drums.

You shouldn't have any guilt in liking Donna. Some of her albums are simply great!

Great list, but I'd argue that the Spice Girls' "Wannabe" was a better "grunge is dead, pop is back!" harbinger.

No way those are real drums on "Whip It"!

I will admit to a great weakness for Donna Summer.

Love the mix, Py!

I considered "Rock Lobster," but Devo was a bigger crossover song, so they get the honors. Loved what you said about Debbie Gibson, and yes it's not really Black Sabbath without Ozzy. Sorry Dio.

Great mix!

The song that says New Wave to me is Rock Lobster, by the B52s. Younger readers may not know that they were ever cool, since they probably grew up with "Love Shack" and such, but the first time I saw them on SNL, I kinda felt myself wake up a bit.

Before Brittney, for me, was that horrid song "I Will Never Love Again", by Debbie Gibson. God, that song was TORTURE, and played EVERY DAY during my lunch break in the cafeteria at my work. If ever I was suicidal, it was then.

Love me some Sabbath, and without Ozzy, it ain't Sabbath. Guess I'm a purist that way. ;)
