You can have the same discussion around today's "blues"-rock technicians - including Joe Bonamassa, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Jonny Lang - as you did about Clapton, Beck, Page, Green, etc. 20 years ago, right?

Clapton was not as pure a blues cat as Muddy Waters or BB King. But Bonamassa's no Clapton, either.

And the Deep Blues stuff is so compelling because it takes the "virtuoso" out of the equation, and harkens back to the rough and raw sounds of the earliers blues players...

It's not JUST a black vs white thing, right? Or, original vs. whatever came after?

It's a pretty fine line that separates all three of the Trinity-- lots of jazz is blues, and a guy like Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown is blues that is jazz quite a bit of the time. Rock'n'roll is certainly more than just blues played by white guys. You'd have to say that one of the things rock blends in is a little bit of Country, for one thing.
