I saw Nathaniel Mayer open for The Black Keys a few years back, and loved his act right away. Sort of a crackhouse version of James Brown, without the horns....Detroit Rock and Soul at its most elemental. I had never heard of Nathaniel until then, but he was one of those Fat Possum reclamation projects at the time. His 2004 album, I Just Want to Be Held, remains a favorite of mine and I urge anyone who reads Popdose to seek it out. Just be careful playing it around the younguns' because it can be pretty filthy in places. And I mean that in a good way.

Also, seek out Nathaniel's 60's single...I Want Love and Affection (Not the House of Correction)....if for no other reason than it's one of the greatest song titles of all times.

RIP Nathaniel Mayer. I can only imagine what your heaven must look like.
