I love this movie.
I was in grade 7 when it came out and I saw it. I hadn't read any Shakespeare nor seen any live adaptions of his work.
(In fact, I think the Archie comics or Teen -TV -show -school -play balcony scene was all I really knew of this play!)
Of course, I fell in love with Dicaprio...and the whole movie in general.
Since then, I've actually studied some Shakespeare and seen the iconic Zeffirelli version of this movie.

I still think this one is stunning; imaginative and brilliant. But when I watch it now, I cringe over some of the lines Dicaprio fluffs, something I wouldn't have been able to notice as a little grade 7 kid.

(on another note: I do love Branagh adaptions of Shakespeare. I once wrote him begging him to do King Lear. I got no response!)

It bugged me to see that the soundtrack contained so many of those bullshit “inspired by” songs that don't actually get used in the film, but the score is pretty good – particularly the Carmina Burana-esque opening.

This movie (and its soundtrack) were out when my wife and I began our initial courtship, and I'll never hear these songs or see this movie — specifically, this scene — without thinking about it. (Also, “#1 Crush” by Garbage, from that soundtrack, is a great song for booty.)

Through the bloggy world, I've discovered that many, many people hated this film, and felt it to be an insult to Shakespeare. Personally, I think he would have loved it. He was about nothing if not bringing his stories to the people. Perhaps I'm biased, because I've never seen a version of Romeo and Juliet that doesn't touch me, and I thought this one was just as good, just very different, as any other.

Not being into drugs myself, I pretty must lost the references there. But the scene you grabbed made me want to watch this movie again. Kinda, NOW.

Also, I had no idea that Baz did “Strictly Ballroom.” Love that movie.
