Name That Tune, Game Twenty-Eight: Coverville Edition

Scraps September 5, 2008 58

Hi everyone — Brian Ibbott here from the Coverville radio show/podcast here with the twenty-eighth edition of Name That Tune. Scraps was generous enough to offer me the chance to guest host this week, and I’m honored to do so. I hope that the clips I’m presenting below are able to maintain the quality (and difficulty) that you’ve come to expect form this feature. And while I’ve got your ear, if you like rare and unusual cover versions of songs, you might like my show, which you can find at Coverville.com. And now the rules, which haven’t changed:

The Rules:

  • MAXIMUM THREE GUESSES between updates of the list, to give everyone a chance to play. An update of the list is when I post the entire list of correct guesses.
  • The Bonus may only be guessed once between updates, but may still be guessed if you have used up your regular three guesses.
  • While I’m not going to be a stickler for spelling and punctuation, you must guess the correct musician and song title to a close approximation.

How the game is played: I have uploaded twenty-three very brief song clips. Most of the songs are well known; none of them are obscure. The clips are drawn from a variety of styles and decades. It’s likely that you’ll find a few of them instantly recognizable, while a few others you won’t know at all (but other people will). There are two parts to this game. The first is guessing the songs themselves. The second part is guessing the puzzle song (clip 23). The second part is guessing the bonus (clip 23). And like last week, we’re looking for the first letter of the SONG TITLE for the first 22 clips. And what is the bonus? You’ll have to determine what the song title initials spell to find out. Some songs may go unguessed the first time round. If songs remain unguessed after a day, I’ll upload longer clips.

And here are the clips:

  1. clip 1
  2. clip 2
  3. clip 3
  4. clip 4
  5. clip 5
  6. clip 6
  7. clip 7
  8. clip 8
  9. clip 9
  10. clip 10
  11. clip 11
  12. clip 12
  13. clip 13
  14. clip 14
  15. clip 15
  16. clip 16
  17. clip 17
  18. clip 18
  19. clip 19
  20. clip 20
  21. clip 21
  22. clip 22

And the Bonus Clip:
The Bonus Clip

As usual, we suggest subscribing to the comments on the post to more easily follow the progress of the game. Remember, MAXIMUM OF THREE GUESSES between updates of the list. Have fun, and good luck!

i thought i could identify the clip on the John Denver recording about 2 min 20 secs into the song.
    but i could be wrong.

  • Jerry

17 is American Pie by the Brady Bunch.

Either the best or worst cover ever, depending on your sense of humor.

    Thanks for the clue.

  • arkitect75

Bonus: “Is it an original or a cover”

    Originals:
    3
    8
    11
    15
    21

14- Leaving on a Jet plane was written by John Denver, BUT his solo version (played) was released after he released it with the Mitchel Trio
20-As stated before, the Buggles re-recorded the song.

“American Pie” by the Brady Bunch is correct.

And arkitect75 is correct in surmising the bonus question, although his list of originals is incomplete.

    Here's the recap:
    1. I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself – Dusty Springfield
    2. Suspicious Minds – Elvis Presley
    3. It Must Be Love – Labi Siffre
    4. Tainted Love – Soft Cell
    5. (The) Air That I Breathe – The Hollies
    6. Never Can Say Goodbye – The Communards
    7. One – Three Dog Night
    8. Respect – Otis Redding
    9. Istanbul (Not Constantinople) – They Might Be Giants
    10. Georgia On My Mind – Ray Charles
    11. I've Got My Mind Set On You – James Ray
    12. Nothing Compares 2 U – Sinead O'Connor
    13. All Along The Watchtower – Jimi Hendrix
    14. Leaving On A Jet Plane – John Denver
    15. Once Bitten, Twice Shy – Ian Hunter
    16. Romeo & Juliet – Indigo Girls
    17. American Pie – The Brady Bunch
    18. Comfortably Numb – Scissor Sisters
    19. Only Love Can Break Your Heart – Saint Etienne
    20. Video Killed The Radio Star – The Buggles
    21. Every Time You Go Away – Hall & Oates
    22. Raspberry Beret – Hindu Love Gods

And as you've correctly surmised, I'm looking for which are originals and which are covers.

  • arkitect75

I can only guess that you're either:
a- counting Ray Charles' as the original, as it's the only one that I can't find someone who previously recorded it, it was written in 1930, and Charles didn't record it until 1960,
b- maybe Im' off on the John Denver release, or
c-The Buggles version is from the original recording.

I found original artists for all but the ones that I listed.

I'm going to go ahead and award it to arkitect75. My records show that Dusty Springfield was the original performer of “I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself”, but as it was written by Burt Bacharach, it's certainly likely that Burt recorded a version himself prior to the version on “Dusty”.
