Name That Tune, Game Two

Hey everybody. Welcome to the second week of Name That Tune. This week’s clips have a theme in common, which ought to quickly become evident. Let’s recap how the game works:

I have uploaded twenty-three very brief song clips. Most of the songs are famous; none of them are obscure. They are drawn from a variety of styles and decades, from the 1950s to the present. It’s likely that you’ll find a few of them instantly recognizable, while a few others you won’t know at all (but other people will).

There are two parts to this game. The first is guessing the songs themselves. The second part is guessing the puzzle song (clip 23). The first letter of the artist’s name for songs one through twenty spell a clue to the identity of song 23. (And if song 23 is guessed early, that ought to help nail down the rest of the songs.)

Some songs may go unguessed the first time round. If songs remain ungessed after a day, I’ll upload longer clips.

The Rules (subject to modification in future games):

  • Maximum three guesses between updates of the list, to give everyone a chance to play.
  • Clip 23 may only be guessed once between updates.
  • While I’m not going to be a stickler for spelling and punctuation, you must guess the correct musician and song title to a close approximation. And here are the clips:

    • Been looking forward to this all week. Sad, isn't it?

I'll follow the rules and only name three.

      15. Goodbye To You by Scandal
      17. When Smokey Sings by ABC
      2. Disappear by INXS
    • 5. "Everybody's Talking" - Nilsson
      12. "Rubberband Man" - The Spinners
      20. "Fight The Power" - The Isley Brothers
    • All of Gary and Bastard's guesses are correct.
    • 10. "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing" - Stevie Wonder

    • GrayFlannelSuit's guesses are likewise correct.
    • 8. “Cruel To Be Kind,” Nick Lowe

      11. “The Naughty Lady of Shady Lane,” The Ames Brothers

      16. “It’s Too Late,” Carole King

      22. “Atomic Dog, “ George Clinton
    • Whoops! Scrub my guess for #22, cos I'm pretty sure I got it wrong anyway...
    • jackfear - #22 is tough because it sounds like the intro to about 8,000 rap songs.
    • "Cruel To Be Kind", "The Naughty Lady of Shady Lane", and "It's Too Late" are all correct.
    • 13. "Sheila Take a Bow," The Smiths

Man, everyone's super-fast on the draw this week!
    • Half the songs are guessed in the first hour!
    • davidmedsker - I live for this kind of stuff. I don't know why - but this is the most enjoyable part of my day. I just can't wait for an update - cause I have three more to guess. It's like I'm 12 - trying to hold in the answers until the teacher gives me the go ahead to reveal them! :)
    • In that case, I hope you find my version of the game acceptable. Scraps has handed me the reins for Game Four, and it's going to be a very different animal, let me tell you...
    • "Sheila Take a Bow" is also correct.
    • "Atomic Dog" is also correct, and I'm going to list it, because I don't want any confusion about whether it was a wrong guess.

      Here's the update:

      1.
      2. Inxs, Disappear
      3.
      4.

      Simon says guess!
    • 1. "Over and Over" - Dave Clark 5
      7. "One Bad Apple" - The Osmonds
    • "Over and Over" and "One Bad Apple" are correct.
    • Oh, an update.
4 is Here Comes The Hotstepper by Ine Kamoze
14 is Bust a Move by Young MC
22 I think is the Intro to Love Rollercoaster by Red Hot Chili Peppers. I think.
    • whoops - didn't see that 22 was already guessed! D'oh
    • 1 is Dave Clark Five's "Over and Over", and
      14 is Young MC's "Bust A Move"
    • "Here Comes the Hotstepper" and "Bust a Move" are correct.

      "Love Rollercoaster" is not.

That leaves four songs, plus the puzzle.
    • Melz
#1. Over and Over - the Dave Clark Five
#4. Here Comes the Hotstepper - Ini Kamoze
      #9. Rag Doll, Frankie Valli
    • Not "Rag Doll".
    • Is #9 Dion's cover of "In The Still of the Night"?
    • Not Dion or "In the Still of the Night".

The acrostic clue -- spelled out by the first letters of the correct guesses -- should be some help now, I think.
    • #21 is Deep Purple by Nino Tempo and April Stevens
    • "Deep Purple" is correct.
    • I miscounted; now there are four left, all divisible by three: 3, 6, 9, 18 (also, 9 and 18 are each the sum of the previous two numbers).

      Plus, um, the puzzle song.
    • I'll take a crack at the puzzle - "Ain't Misbehavin'", Sarah Vaughn?
    • It's not "Ain't Misbehavin'".
    • Divine One Sassy Scatting?
    • Is that Sarah Vaughn "Lullabye of Birdland"?
    • Congratulations, Brian! Head on over to our "Contact Us" page and drop me an e-mail with your address -- we've got a prize for you.
    • Almost all the songs were Billboard #1 singles. Was "Bust A Move"?
    • DING DING DING! It is Sarah Vaughan's scatting at the end of "Lullabye of Birdland" on her album with Clifford Brown. Well done, Brian!

And partial credit to GrayFlannelSuit with the first Sarah Vaughan guess, and to DavidMedsker for piecing together the acrostic.

      Still four songs left!
    • Gah! "Button Up Your Overcoat"
    • Oh, I guess not. (grin)
    • 1. Dave Clark Five, Over and Over
      2. Inxs, Disappear
      3. V
      4. Ini Kamoze, Here Comes the Hotstepper
      5. Nilsson, Everybody's Talkin'

      7. Osmonds, One Bad Apple
      8. Nick Lowe, Cruel To Be Kind

      11. Ames Brothers, The Naughty Lady of Shady Lane
      12. Spinners, Rubberband Man
      13. Smiths, Sheila Take a Bow
      14. Young MC, Bust a Move
      15. Scandal, Goodbye to You
      16. Carole King, It's Too Late
      17. ABC, When Smokey Sings
      18. T
      19. Tokens, The Lion Sleeps Tonight
      20. Isley Brothers, Fight the Power
      21. Nino Tempo and April Stevens, Deep Purple
      22. George Clinton, Atomic Dog
    • Whoa, did everyone give up once the final song was guessed?

The closest guess I have for #18 is Taylor Dayne, but I know that's wrong.
    • Song 3 (1964), is the most obscure song here. It was not a hit, though it was written by a hitmaker, and is better known today, having been anthologized at least 28 times.

Song 6 (2001) is by a musician better known as part of a duo.

      Song 9 (1958) was a huge hit by a true one-hit wonder.

Song 18 (1987) was the first hit by a musician who had several hits over an approximately five-year chart period.
    • Well, for 18 - the hint you gave certainly fits Tiffany - but that sounds too dancey though - it's not "I Saw Him Standing There" is it?
    • Not "I Saw Him Standing There".
    • esque
Is #3 The Velvelettes' "Needle In A Haystack"?
    • "Needle in a Haystack" is correct!
    • I'm offering one more guess for #18 and after that I think I've exhausted my options - Tell It To My Heart by Taylor Dayne.
    • "Tell It to My Heart" is correct!

      Songs 6 and 9 remain.
    • 9 is "Little Star" by the Elegants (1958 gave it away)
    • "Little Star" is correct.

I didn't expect #6 to be the last one left, but there it is.
    • I think the thing that's holding me up on 6 - is that sound in the clip could really be a male or female.
    • Right. It could be Peaches OR Herb. Or Marylin McCoo OR Billy Davis Jr.!
    • Or Kid or Play. No, wait - that doesn't fit the bill... Ashford or Simpson?
    • MichaelFortes
#6 is "Music" by Eric Sermon, who was half of EPMD. And it's Marvin Gaye's voice we're hearing in that clip, sampled from 1982's "Turn On Some Music" -- the opening song on side two of Midnight Love, the final album of original material released in Gaye's lifetime.
    • I need to reschedule my tai chi class so I can participate. Don't any of you people (excluding Gary, who has definite responsibilities) have jobs?

For the record, the missus and I got 2, 5, 12, 15, 16, 19 and 20. No idea on #6 or the puzzle song.
    • I do have a job - I multitask! :)
    • "Music" by Erick Sermon is correct.

      the final list:

      1. Dave Clark Five, Over and Over
      2. Inxs, Disappear
      3. Velvelettes, Needle in a Haystack
      4. Ini Kamoze, Here Comes the Hotstepper
      5. Nilsson, Everybody's Talkin'
      6. Erick Sermon, Music
      7. Osmonds, One Bad Apple
      8. Nick Lowe, Cruel To Be Kind
      9. Elegants, Little Star
      10. Stevie Wonder, Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing
      11. Ames Brothers, The Naughty Lady of Shady Lane
      12. Spinners, Rubberband Man
      13. Smiths, Sheila Take a Bow
      14. Young MC, Bust a Move
      15. Scandal, Goodbye to You
      16. Carole King, It's Too Late
      17. ABC, When Smokey Sings
      18. Taylor Dayne, Tell It to My Heart
      19. Tokens, Lion Sleeps Tonight
      20. Isley Brothers, Fight the Power
      21. Nino Tempo and April Stevens, Deep Purple
      22. George Clinton, Atomic Dog

and the puzzle song: "Lullaby of Birdland" by Sarah Vaughan.

      Thanks, everybody!
    • (And I didn't know where that sample came from, though it sounded like Gaye. Thanks!)
