Name That Tune, Game Fourteen

Hey everybody. Welcome to the fourteenth peace-disturbing week of Name That Tune at Popdose. Even among the most ancient peoples, games had rules, and traditionalists that we are, our games are no different, except we don’t club you if you break the rules:

The Rules (subject to modification in future games):

  • MAXIMUM THREE GUESSES between updates of the list, to give everyone a chance to play. An update of the list is when I post the entire list of correct guesses.
  • The Puzzle clip may only be guessed once between updates. You may always guess the puzzle song once between updates, even if you have used up your three regular guesses.
  • While I’m not going to be a stickler for spelling and punctuation, you must guess the correct musician and song title to a close approximation. How the game is played:I have uploaded twenty-five very brief song clips. Most of the songs are well known; none of them are obscure. The clips are drawn from a variety of styles and decades. It’s likely that you’ll find a few of them instantly recognizable, while a few others you won’t know at all (but other people will, damn them). There are two parts to this game. The first is guessing the songs themselves. The second part is guessing the puzzle song (clip 25). No acrostic this time: just twenty-five songs that have something in common, which taken together point to the identity of the puzzle song. (And of course, if the puzzle song is guessed early, that ought to help nail down the rest of the songs.)

Some songs may go unguessed the first time round. If songs remain unguessed after a day, I’ll upload longer clips.

    And here are the clips:

btw, Scraps, I just recently connected that you were the guy doing Seventies Song Survival. Sorry that "biggest hits" collection wasn't.

Love this game, too. Thanks for puttin' it up.
    • MC_Snocap
      Uh - redundant guesses.
    • I won't count those guesses against your total. I've just posted an update, so you've got three more guesses.
    • Thanks! Yeah, I was having fun with that till I realized just how many songs were missing, which took away a lot of the point. I'm still figuring a way to maybe resurrect it.
    • (13 and 23 from last week: Cover Girls, "We Can't Go Wrong", and Aaron Hall, "I Miss You")
    • I think I'm wrong again, but the puzzle song should be something like, "At the Zoo" by Simon and Garfunkel
    • Not "At the Zoo" by Simon and Garfunkel.

    • Rankoutsider
      11. Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - Mickey's Monkey
    • Ooh, nice guess, but not The Mammals, "Lay Down Yr Mountain"
    • I did nearly use "Mickey's Monkey" by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, and it's a good guess, but incorrect.
    • Chris
11 - Monkey Time by Major Lance
    • "Monkey Time" by Major Lance is correct.

      Puzzle Song
    • 2. Green Jelly - Three Little Pigs
      3. Patti Page - (How Much Is) That Doggie in the Window?
      17. Paul Anka - Puppy Love
    • I have also uploaded a slightly longer clip for the puzzle song.
    • correct:
Green Jelly - Three Little Pigs
Patti Page - Doggie in the Window
      Paul Anka - Puppy Love
    • MichaelFortes
I'll take a stab at 14... is it "Joe The Lion" by David Bowie?
    • "Joe the Lion" by David Bowie is correct.

Two songs left -- 7 and 20 -- plus the puzzle song.
    • Rankoutsider
20 Would be "The Horse" by Cliff Nobles and Company. Was beaten out by Hugh Maskela's "Grazing in the Grass". I should have recognized the drum break.
    • "The Horse" by Cliff Nobles & Co. is correct. I thought if I included any part of the melody it would be guessed instantly, and even so the drum break is very recognizable, yeah.
    • Rankoutsider
You could have clipped a very small horn part. I would have guessed something by Cake before the theme came out. Would have worked for "The Lonely Bull" also.
    • I didn't even think of "The Lonely Bull".
    • Another hint for number 7: if I used a vocal, it would be a dead giveaway.
    • becky
"Release the Bats" by The Birthday Party
    • "Release the Bats" by the Birthday Party is correct.

The only thing left is the Puzzle Song. I think the slightly longer clip I posted is guessable, but if it's unguessed by tomorrow afternoon I'll post a longer clip.
    • M.
Is the puzzle song is either something by the Dixie CHICKS

or COPPERHEAD Road by Steve Earle.

      ???
    • Neither the Dixie Chicks nor Steve Earle.
    • One of the earlier guesses of the puzzle song correctly identified something the 24 regular songs have in common, a something that is not shared by the Dixie Chicks or "Copperhead Road".
    • Marko
      The Mammals - Infinity Medley
    • It's not a song by the Mammals. This band is famous.
    • If you want another musical challenge, check out Fast Trax at www.davewillieradio.blogspot.com
    • I think I own this puzzle song. Only wish that helped me in any way to identify it. I think I need to start listening to my albums again.
    • 1. Very famous band.

      2. Yes, the 24 regular songs all have mammals. What do mammals have in common?

      3. The very first guess at the puzzle song heard something in the clip -- which at that point was only one note -- that was perceptive and true. The song and musician guessed were not close, but the reason for the guess was correct.
    • Elaine
Is the reason for the guess "mandolin?" "Rocker doing mandolin turn?" something like that?
    • Indeed, "rocker doing mandolin" fits the case.
    • Joy
Is it a Led Zeppelin tune? (Wracking my brain, here...)
    • Generally I prefer full guesses, a song and an artist, because verifying a band without a song can just start people guessing every song by the band that fits the criteria.

But since this game started two days ago: No, it's not a Led Zeppelin song.
    • Joy
Sorry about that! But thanks for the hint; now I can stop listening to Zeppelin... :-)
    • Not a problem!
    • Thierry
Damn - there goes my Heart/Lovemongers guess...
    • Been bugging me for awhile. It's "Hairshirt" by R.E.M.
    • Yes! It is "Hairshirt" by R.E.M. Congratulations nhmehta! I believe if you drop a note to jefito at popdose dot come, he'll have a prize for you.

Whew! Didn't expect that to last so long. Thank you everyone for playing!
