Name That Tune, Game Nine

Scraps March 7, 2008 66

Hey everybody. Welcome to the ninth ear-boggling week of Name That Tune at Popdose. Because everybody loves rules, let’s do the rules first:

The Rules (subject to modification in future games):

  • MAXIMUM THREE GUESSES between updates of the list, to give everyone a chance to play. An update of the list is when I post the entire list of correct guesses.
  • Clip 21 may only be guessed once between updates.
  • While I’m not going to be a stickler for spelling and punctuation, you must guess the correct musician and song title to a close approximation. For those new to the game, here’s how it works: I have uploaded twenty very brief song clips. Most of the songs are well known; none of them are obscure. The clips are drawn from a variety of styles and decades. It’s likely that you’ll find a few of them instantly recognizable, while a few others you won’t know at all (but other people will). There are two parts to this game. The first is guessing the songs themselves. The second part is guessing the puzzle song (clip 20). Once again, we’re doing an acrostic game: The first letter of the name of the artist of the first 19 songs spells out a clue to the identity of the puzzle song. (And of course, if the puzzle song is guessed early, that ought to help nail down the rest of the songs.)Some songs may go unguessed the first time round. If songs remain unguessed after a day, I’ll upload longer clips.

    And here are the clips:

    1. clip 1
    2. clip 2
    3. clip 3
    4. clip 4
    5. clip 5
    6. clip 6
    7. clip 7
    8. clip 8
    9. clip 9
    10. clip 10
    11. clip 11
    12. clip 12
    13. clip 13
    14. clip 14
    15. clip 15
    16. clip 16
    17. clip 17
    18. clip 18
    19. clip 19

    And the Puzzle Song:

The music and clue for #9 sounds like it could be Chris Hillman but I thought all his songs got co-writer credit with either McGuinn or Parsons.

    • esque

Wikipedia shows that he has some solo credits with the Byrds (but not with Flying Burrito Brothers). I was scouring for Timothy B. Schmit-penned songs for Poco, but your guess is better.

    • Jeff Gee

15 sounds like Miss Swan but I'm guessing it's not…

“Don't Smoke in Bed” and “Overnight Celebrity” are correct.

My clue for #9 was a bad, bad clue. I should have said that the songwriter wrote songs for two influential bands; he was only in one of them. And yes, you are circling near the answer, though you haven't named the songwriter.

As for the influential metal band, they are European and modern, and perhaps they have no fans reading this thread.

      Alright, let's try

Gene Clark, “Tried So Hard,” for number 9.

      “Tried So Hard” is correct!

      One to go.

Or rather — I get excited — the song is correct, and it was written by Gene Clark. What band recorded the version heard here?

    • M.

Flying Burrito Brothers, “Tried So Hard”

Well if the clue is “BROTHERSFIVENOTFIVE” Then I would guess the band might be Opeth but I'll be damned if I'll be able to get the song.

I actually am a fan of Opeth, scraps – and I'm assuming that's the band in 14. But hell, even that longer clip you have up could be anyone of like 30 tunes – but I'll make the guess of “To Bid You Farewell” off the Morningrise album.

“Tried So Hard ” by the FBB is correct, naturally.

Okay, yes, it is Opeth, and it's even off Morningrise. I will admit defeat — the first song that hasn't been guessed in the game — even the right Ramones song got guessed eventually! — and give it away: “Advent”.

I tried to make it a little more challenging this time, with some album tracks mixed in with the singles and radio hits, so thank you everyone for your patience, and for playing. I honestly never know which ones will end up being the hard ones. I wouldn't have guessed that “I Do the Rock” was an easy one, for example.

I'm going to be gone next week, so see you all on the 21st!
