Name That Tune, Game Seventeen

Hey everybody. Welcome to the seventeenth synapse-snapping week of Name That Tune at Popdose. A game without rules is a kind of anarchy, don’t you think? And we don’t want that. So:

The Rules (subject to modification in future games):

  • MAXIMUM THREE GUESSES between updates of the list, to give everyone a chance to play. An update of the list is when I post the entire list of correct guesses.
  • The Puzzle clip may only be guessed once between updates, but may still be guessed if you have used up your regular three guesses.
  • While I’m not going to be a stickler for spelling and punctuation, you must guess the correct musician and song title to a close approximation. How the game is played:I have uploaded twenty-six very brief song clips. Most of the songs are well known; none of them are obscure. The clips are drawn from a variety of styles and decades. It’s likely that you’ll find a few of them instantly recognizable, while a few others you won’t know at all (but other people will).

There are two parts to this game. The first is guessing the songs themselves. The second part is guessing the puzzle song (clip 26). Once again, we’re doing an acrostic game: This time, the first letter of the name of the SONG for the first 25 clips spells out a clue to the identity of the puzzle song. (And of course, if the puzzle song is guessed early, that ought to help nail down the rest of the songs.)

Some songs may go unguessed the first time round. If songs remain unguessed after a day, I’ll upload longer clips.

    And here are the clips:

    1. clip 1
    2. clip 2
    3. clip 3
    4. clip 4
    5. clip 5

    And the Puzzle Song:
    The Puzzle Song

I suggest subscribing to the comments on the post (click on “Track Comments”) to more easily follow the progress of the game. And again: This time it’s the first letter of the name of the songs that’s spelling out the clue. Have fun!

    • Dr. Corndog
      8. She's a Beauty - The Tubes
      19. Earn Enough For Us - XTC
      24. Cry Like a Baby - Box Tops
    • Dr. Corndog
And a wild-ass guess at the puzzle song:

Get it On (Bang a Gong) - T. rex
    • Jerry
      21. Black Velvet - Alannah Myles

And I'm not too proud to jump on this week's "gimme":

      23. Nasty - Janet Jackson
    • Wow, this is so much easier when you catch this puzzle early. (Usually there are 30 comments before I show up.)

      1. "Calling All Angels" by Train
      3. "Underneath It All" by No Doubt
      14. "It's Raining McC -- uh, Men" by the Weather Girls
    • Rich
22 - "Urgent" Foreigner. (I think that's the right one.)
    • Not 100% sure on either of these...

      2. Peaceful Easy Feeling - The Eagles
      12. Rock Your Baby - George McRae
    • Oh, one more:

      16. Hot Girls in Love - Loverboy
    • #17 - Over and Over - Dave Clark 5
      #21 - Black Velvet - Alannah Miles
    • All regular song guesses so far are correct except "Peaceful Easy Feeling".

"Bang a Gong" is not the puzzle song.

It's really hard to come up with any clip of "Nasty" that isn't a giveaway, no matter how short.
    • I was sort of hoping that "Urgent" would elicit a couple of Supertramp guesses.
    • Rich
I've been wrong on more guesses than I've been right, in your contests, but that horn gave "Urgent" away. (In my pocket universe, that song is deeply connected to Legos, Star Wars figs, and a TI-99.)
    • Whoops - missed that previous guess for Alannah.
    • MC_Snocap
      Hmmmm ...
#2 - "Lying Eyes" by The Eagles
#9 - "Use Ta Be My Girl" by the O'Jays
    • "Use Ta Be My Girl" by the O'Jays is correct.

"Lyin' Eyes" by the Eagles is incorrect.
    • Half the songs are guessed, so it's time for an OFFICIAL UPDATE:

    • Correct:
"Looking Out My Back Door" by Credence Clearwater Revival
"You're My Best Friend" by Queen
"One Toke Over the Line" by Brewer & Shipley

      Incorrect:
"I Can't Help Myself" by the Four Tops (but yes, that is a good guess)
    • "Blowing Kisses in the Wind" by Paula Abdul is correct.
    • Jee Gee
7-- "Only You" by The Platters?
    • Rich
      Well it's pretty easy to read the clue, now... (;
    • Not "Only You" by the Platters.
    • Jee Gee
Ooh! Ohh! Number seven is "EARTH ANGEL" by The Penguins.

      Puzzle Song (26)
    • "Earth Angel" is a wonderful song. But #7 is not "Earth Angel".
    • Puzzle Song: "This Song", George Harrison
    • 7. Every Morning - Sugar Ray
    • 11. Always There for You - Stryper
    • #25 "History Lesson Part II"- Minutemen.

Cool, I got the coolest song of the bunch, I'm surprised Dr. Corndog didn't, what with corndog being an integral part of that song and all.
    • Ding ding ding! MathewBolin nails the puzzle song: "This Song" by George Harrison, written in the aftermath of losing the "My Sweet Lord"/"He's So Fine" plagiarism case (an asinine decision, IMGDO). It includes the falsetto aside "Could be sugar pie, honey bunch" (which was delivered by Eric Idle when Harrison performed the song on Saturday Night Live). Nicely done, MatthewBolin.

"Every Morning" by Sugar Ray is also correct.

"Always There for You" by Stryper" is incorrect.
    • "History Lesson Part 2" by the Minutemen is correct.
    • Six songs left. ALL GUESSING IS NOW UNLIMITED.

01 C Calling All Angels - Train (nhmehta)
02 O One Toke Over the Line - Brewer & Shipley (dr corndog)
03 U Underneath It All - No Doubt (nhmehta)
04 L Lookin' Out My Back Door - Credence Clearwater Revival (dr corndog)
      05 D
06 B Blowing Kisses in the Wind - Paula Abdul (eric)
07 E Every Morning - Sugar Ray (matthew bolin)
      08 S She's a Beauty - The Tubes (dr corndog)
09 U Use Ta Be My Girl - O'Jays (mc snocap)
      10 G
      11 A
12 R Rock Your Baby - George McRae (david medsker)
      13 P

24 C Cry Like a Baby - Box Tops (dr corndog)
25 H History Lesson, Part II - Minutemen (ken gaper's blog)

Puzzle Song (26) - This Song - George Harrison (matthew bolin)
    • Dr. Corndog
      15. Easy - The Commodores
    • "Easy" by the Commodores is correct. I thought that one might be one of the early giveaways.
    • hints:

#5 is a very famous 1960s song by a successful duo. It's hard to think of a more substantial hint that doesn't give it away, so I'll leave it at that. The clip doesn't sound like the rest of the song, but I'm still surprised someone hasn't got it.

#10 is a big 1960s hit cover of a song from an influential musical.

#11 is a 1990s hit, the title track of an album, but not the biggest hit from the album.

#13 is another big 1960s hit, the biggest hit by a band who had several. Like #10 and unlike #5, this song is counterculture-inspired.

#18 is the only remaining song that was not a hit single. An 1970s album track from arguably the greatest album by one of the most influential bands ever.
    • 11. After the Rain - Nelson
    • mrsmartin
#13 People Got To Be Free-The Rascals ?
    • 5. Dead Man's Curve - Jan & Dean

"People Got to Be Free" by the Rascals
      "After the Rain" by Nelson

      two songs left.
    • Thierry
Is 18 Parliament? Night of the Thumpasaurus People?
    • "Night of the Thumpasorus Peoples" by Parliament is correct.
    • Old_Davy
      10. Good Morning Starshine - Oliver
    • "Good Morning Starshine" by Oliver is correct.

That's all of them! Thanks for playing, everybody!
