Name That Tune, Game Ten

Hey everybody. Get your eardrums (and hammers and stirrups) ready for the tenth brow-bunching week of Name That Tune at Popdose. Rules are the order of the day! And here they are:

The Rules (subject to modification in future games):

  • MAXIMUM THREE GUESSES between updates of the list, to give everyone a chance to play. An update of the list is when I post the entire list of correct guesses.
  • The Puzzle Clip may only be guessed once between updates.
  • While I’m not going to be a stickler for spelling and punctuation, you must guess the correct musician and song title to a close approximation. We’ve got a bumper crop this week: thirty-four clips to guess. Most of the songs are well known; none of them are obscure. The clips are drawn from a variety of styles and decades. It’s likely that you’ll find a few of them instantly recognizable, while a few others you won’t know at all (but other people will). There are two parts to this game. The first is guessing the songs themselves. The second part is guessing the puzzle song (clip 34). No acrostic this time, just a simple puzzle: the first 33 songs taken together are a clue to the identity of the puzzle song. Some songs may go unguessed the first time round. If songs remain unguessed after a day, I’ll upload longer clips. And here are the clips:

    • Yes, and yes! "Weak" by Sisters with Voices is correct -- and the puzzle song is indeed "One Beat" by the great, lamented Sleater-Kinney. (All the regular songs in the quiz have titles with one syllable -- one beat.)

Congratulations, editgrrl, and if you send an email to jefito at popdose dot com, I believe he has a prize for you.

      Thanks everyone for playing!
    • 30. "Weak" by SWV (who wanted to be known as TLC)

      Verbs?
    • editgrrl
#34/puzzle song: one beat by sleater-kinnet
    • editgrrl
      sorry, that would be sleater-kinney
    • Sorry - meant the puzzle song, not #30.
    • Man, even with the longer sample, I still can't place #30. It sounds like the intro to Weezer's "The Sweater Song", but I know that's not it.
    • Longer clips of the remaining two songs:

      Song 30

      Puzzle Song
    • Generally I'd prefer people not use Google, but work out of their own knowledge, but I suppose this late in the game anything that gets the songs guessed is okay.

"Night" by Jackie WIlson and "Shout!" by Joey Dee and the Starliters are correct.

One more regular song -- #30 -- plus the puzzle song. I'll post longer clips of both of those.
    • Shelley002
      Hmm...
The clues help, I think #13 is Shout, but wondering which cover sent me scurrying for reference material. Which leads me to Joey Dee and the Starliters.
So that means #3 is Jackie Wilson, more scurrying, one word titles...Night. Wasn't familiar with that one, but has that sweet, hokey 50's into 60's ballad feel. Nice.
What a moron I must have been before Google was invented. Now I'm only as much of an idiot as I admit to being...
    • "Bent" is correct.
    • FreeAgent
First time here...thanks for the new clues posted a few mins ago. That would make #14 "Bent" from Matchbox Twenty.
    • #3 - A big hit by one of the singers who helped define soul.

#13 - A hit cover of a song that remains famous today. It was originally written as a response to a song by the singer of #3.

#14 - The singer of this song appears elsewhere in this game.

#30 - One of several hits by a modern vocal group who originally were intended to have a name that was taken by another group in this game.

      #34 - Major indie rock.
