Name That Tune, Game Thirteen

Hey everybody. Welcome to the thirteenth finger-snapping week of Name That Tune at Popdose. Rules? We got your steenkin’ rules right here:

The Rules (subject to modification in future games):

  • MAXIMUM THREE GUESSES between updates of the list, to give everyone a chance to play. An update of the list is when I post the entire list of correct guesses.
  • The Puzzle clip may only be guessed once between updates.
  • While I’m not going to be a stickler for spelling and punctuation, you must guess the correct musician and song title to a close approximation. How the game is played:

I have uploaded twenty-five very brief song clips. Most of the songs are well known; none of them are obscure. The clips are drawn from a variety of styles and decades. It’s likely that you’ll find a few of them instantly recognizable, while a few others you won’t know at all (but other people will, damn them).

There are two parts to this game. The first is guessing the songs themselves. The second part is guessing the puzzle song (clip 25). Once again, we’re doing an acrostic game: The first letter of the name of the artist of the first 24 songs spells out a clue to the identity of the puzzle song. (And of course, if the puzzle song is guessed early, that ought to help nail down the rest of the songs.)

Some songs may go unguessed the first time round. If songs remain unguessed after a day, I’ll upload longer clips.

    And here are the clips:

      Puzzle Song (25)
    • Puzzle Song: Kirsty MacColl - They Don't Know
    • Rich
Is 15 "Hello" by everyone's main man Lionel R?
    • Rich
Oops - already guessed. Apologies for not scrollerating futher.
    • Rich
And is 17 "Keep 'Em Separated" by the Offspring?
    • The puzzle song is Kirsty MacColl's original recording of "They Don't Know". Well done Matthew Bolin! Did you recognize it or work it out then recognize it?
    • It was familiar to begin with, but then I knew what it was immediately after figuing out the acrostic (about a hour ago--I was waiting in anticipation for you to post the update, having already giving my three guesses that round).
    • Are we allowed to guess the clue acrostic? Knowing it's a Kirsty song makes it a bit obvious...
    • 17 is not "Come Out and Play" (the keep-'em-separated song).
    • I had better make it clear in the future that you can always guess the puzzle song once between updates, regardless of your guesses at the other songs.

Go ahead and guess the acrostic. It helps everyone guess the songs.
    • Jerry
If 17 is Pretty Fly (For a White Guy) by Offspring, then Rich should get partial credit, since it's pretty much the same song.
    • Rich
I *definitely* was thinking "Come Out and Play." You'd think guy who was in college in the angry white wastelands of north Fla. in the early 90s would be keen to the difference between Offspring songs....
    • Okay: the acrostic is "Killed by Mexican powerboat." Which is maybe kinda morbid, but if it helps everybody guess...

      That works out to:

01 K Kinks, All Day and All of the Night (m)
02 I Ian Dury & the Blockheads, Hit Me etc (buffalo chipz)
03 L Lyle Lovett, If I Had a Boat (matthew bolin)

    • "Angel of Mine" is correct.

"Come Out and Play" is incorrect [and number 17 has already been guessed -- it's "Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)"].

How mortifying. I got all excited because I never remember to get here early enough to guess. Apologies. Keep up the good work!

PS #5 has to be ELP... lucky man?
    • No harm! but #5 is not ELP. Band is considerably less well known (though they were popular in Canada), and most people think they're a one-hit wonder.
    • Crystal
      #6 is Lady by D'angelo
    • "Lady" is correct.
    • M.
Number 5 is "the Last Song," by Edward Bear.
    • M.
Number 12 is "Shake It," by Ian Matthews.
    • M.
Number 13 sounds like Chris DeBurgh to me, so let's go with "Lady In Red."
    • "Last Song" and "Shake It" are correct.

      "Lady in Red" is incorrect.
    • Jerry
Is #15 Neil Diamond - Love on the Rocks?
    • "Love on the Rocks" is correct.
    • I just want to say how much I miss Kirsty MacColl. She was one of a kind. Sigh.
