Name That Tune, Game Thirty-Six

And just like that, I understand why Scraps was putting these together all the way up until the very last minute. Which is why I’m only doing them every other week.

The Rules:

  • MAXIMUM THREE GUESSES between updates of the list, to give everyone a chance to play. An update of the list is when I post the entire list of correct guesses with the words “OFFICIAL UPDATE.” “Guess” is officially defined as “attempting to identify any one song.” Therefore, one comment that lists three songs counts as three guesses.
  • While I’m not going to be a stickler for spelling and punctuation, you must guess the correct musician and song title to a close approximation.

How the game is played: I have uploaded twenty-five very brief song clips. Please bear in mind that both my record collection and knowledge of music are probably 5% of that of Scraps’, so these quizzes won’t be nearly as comprehensive – or even hit-based – as his were. I will use mostly well-known songs and bands, but I reserve the right to use something obscure if it suits my needs, like it does this week. Live versions and covers are also fair game, though I will stay away from remixes, because that’s just mean.

There is a puzzle song this week, and the other songs will provide a clue to the puzzle song’s identity. Hold it, now hit it!

Here are the clips:

  1. clip 1
  2. clip 2
  3. clip 3
  4. clip 4
  5. clip 5
  6. clip 6

  26. And here’s the puzzle song:

I suggest subscribing to the comments on the post to more easily follow the progress of the game. Remember — please! — NO MORE THAN THREE GUESSES between updates of the list. Have fun!

#3 March of the Swivelheads - The English Beat
  • ozarkmatt
#5 Funeral For A friend - Sir Elton John
  • Wow, looks like it's just you and me today, ozarkmatt.

    Both guesses are correct.
  • Jerry
    14. Endgame - REM
  • David_E
    2. Long Lost Brother of Mine – ABWH

(Shot in the dark here ...)
  • REM is correct. ABWH is incorrect, but you have no idea how close you are.
  • David_E
Ha. Actually, I have all sorts of ideas how close I am – just can't quite get the tune.

But I'd recognize the keys and heavy-handed arrangements anywhere.
  • Shannon
    16. Crescendolls by Daft Punk

    12. Theme from Austin Powers
  • 7. ABC - Beauty Stab
    8. The Beatles - Flying
    15. Rush - YYZ
  • Rebecca
    12. Quincy Jones - Soul Bossa Nova (to be precise)
  • Rebecca
    24. The Brazilian - Genesis

    Hilarious!
  • #2: Yes, "Cinema"
  • Rebecca
    22. Follow Your Bliss - B-52s

Wow, haven't heard that in a while.
  • #20: Art of Noise, "Close to the Edit" maybe?
  • Gary Lucy
    7. Would I Lie to You- Eurythmics
  • SansDirection
    #1, The Smiths, "Oscillate Wildly"
  • Gonna guess Devo, "Timing X" for the puzzle song.
  • SansDirection
    #25, Faith No More, "Epic"
#23, Emerson Lake and Palmer, "Karn Evil #9, 2nd Impression"
  • Alan Francis
    #6 OMD - Southern
  • Not sure, but is #10 Brand X, "And So to F"?
  • Alan Francis
13 is Tears for Fears - The Working Hour
  • Wow, I go away for a bit, and not only is a good chunk of the game guessed, someone nails the puzzle song! "Timing X" is correct, congrats to Francis.

Art of Noise and Daft Punk are partially correct. (right bands, wrong songs)

ABC, The Beatles, Rush, Quincy Jones, Genesis, The B-52s, The Smiths and OMD are correct.

Eurythmics, Faith No More, and Emerson Lake & Palmer are incorrect.
  • Brand X and Tears for Fears are incorrect.
  • Is there some kind of sliding scale for correctness? I mean, The Art of Noise have a kajillion nearly-identical remixes of what might as well just be a handful of songs, so getting the wrong title is perfectly understandable. Not like getting the wrong They Might Be Giants or Leonard Cohen song.
  • I see what you mean, but I'm holding out for the right answer on this one. If I used Moments in Love and someone guessed Love, or Three Fingers of Love, I'd give them credit. I didn't get obscure here, if that helps.
  • Fair enough. Fairer than I expected, in fact.
  • "Legs", then, for #20?
  • Not "Legs."
  • Half the puzzle is guessed, so it's time for an OFFICIAL UPDATE:

    1. "Oscillate Wildly," The Smiths (sansdirection)
    2. "Cinema," Yes (Francis)
    3. "March of the Swivelheads," English Beat (ozarkmatt)
    4.
    5. "Funeral for a Friend," Elton John (ozarkmatt)
    6. "Southern," OMD (Alan Francis)
    7. "Beauty Stab," ABC (arensb)
    8. "Flying," The Beatles (arensb)
    9.
    10.
    11.
    12. "Soul Bossa Nova," Quincy Jones (Rebecca)
    13.
    14. "Endgame," REM (Jerry)
    15. "YYZ," Rush (arensb)
    16.
    17.
    18.
    19.
    20.
    21.
    22. "Follow Your Bliss," The B-52's (Rebecca)
    23.
    24. "The Brazilian," Genesis (Rebecca)
    25.
    Puzzle: "Timing X," Devo (Francis)
  • RLB
23 is Sting... "Dream of the Blue Turtles," I think...
  • 20. The Art of Noise - Beat Box (Diversion 1)
    23. Emerson, Lake, and Palmer - Bitches Crystal
    25. Rob Dougan - Clubbed to Death (Kurayamino Variation)
  • Man, I clearly need to listen to more Emerson Lake & Palmer.

Sting, "Beat Box" and Rob D are correct.
  • No. No, you don't. Buying "Tarkus" was one of the mistakes of my youth, back when I thought that "interesting cover" meant good music.

And now that I think about it, "Bitches Crystal" has lyrics, which means it can't be the right answer.
  • Rebecca
Hee. I'd rather listen to Genesis than ELP, but they have their moments.
  • There is one more Genesis-related track that no one has guessed yet...
  • Rebecca
    Whaaaaaat?

Yeah, there's a very familiar track, but I've yet to figure it out!
  • It's 4:00 and there are still unguessed songs left. Time for some CLUES:

    4. They made one album. One badass album.
    9. Gimme a beat, preferably a big beat.
    10. Contributed to one of the other songs in this quiz, which has already been guessed.
    11. My favorite band of the '90s by a country mile.
    13. My favorite band of the '80s by a country mile.
    16. It's already been established that this is Daft Punk. But which song is it?
    17. A 17-minute version of this recently surfaced on a reissue of the album that originally spawned it.
    18. You've never seen their faces.
    19. Often the butt of many a Manchester joke, but I quite liked them.
    21. They make money every time someone buys a certain Coldplay album.
  • The game is back open to all players, by the way.
  • I guess that means #4 isn't the Pet Shop Boys, who turn out to have a longer discography (no pun intended) than I thought.

#17: 17 minutes long, and Yes and Rush are already on the list. It's not Alice's Restaurant, and it doesn't sound like Inna Gadda Da Vida. A Jerry Garcia guitar solo, perhaps?

"You've never seen their faces": that's easy! It's either the Art of Noise, or the Cure before "Bloodflowers".
  • Not the Pet Shop Boys, though they will surely be frequent guests to NTT in the future, as I own all of their albums.

#17 is the last band on earth that you'd expect to make a 17-minute song.
  • RLB
    Hm. Spiritualized?
  • Nope. Here's a big clue: John Hughes used it in one of his movies.
  • New Order, "Elegia"?
  • Yes.
  • SansDirection
    The Ramones?
  • No, but your answer to #1 is really, really close.
  • Clue for #18 makes me think it's the Residents, but it's nothing I recognize if it is.
  • Not the Residents.
  • Eric
    10. Phil Collins - The West Side
  • D'oh, I forgot about The West Side. I could tell it wasn't Droned or Hand in Hand and thought that was all of them.
  • Phil Collins is correct.
  • Wild guess at #13 is Tears for Fears, "Mad World"
  • Terence
    #13: Tiger Tiger, Duran Duran
  • Duran Duran is correct. And for those who didn't see the guess further up, #17 is "Elegia" by New Order.
  • RLB
This is a real 5-star-puzzle of a Name That Tune. Lots of songs I couldn't put my finger on, but I knew I'd know them when someone else got 'em. Frustrating, but making me refresh the page all afternoon.... good stuff!
  • Many thanks, though with so many unsolved, I started to worry that I made it too hard.
  • Oh, I don't know. I recognized eight or nine tunes this time around, as opposed to my usual one or two.
  • Bocca
    19. 808 State- Pacific
    21. Kraftwerk- Trans-Europe Express
  • 808 State and Kraftwerk are correct. I was looking for "Metal on Metal," but "Trans Europe Express" will do.

I'm still shocked that no one has guessed at #4 and #9. Anyone who followed the Big Beat scene of the late '90s should know both of these songs.

#11 - Big, big, huge UK band in the '90s.
#18. - You can't see their faces because...they wear masks.
  • Slipknot?
  • Ha! Try again. Think south of the border...
  • The only Mexican band I can think of at the moment is Hocico, and I seriously doubt that's them.
  • The band isn't Mexican, but their masks are.

    And that should do it.
  • Los Straitjackets, then, probably. Doubt I'd be able to pinpoint the song, though.
  • The title is very similar to one of the songs on either side of it in the list.
  • Gonna go with "Pacifica", in that case.
  • "Pacifica" is correct, and while I'm at it, let's put the rest of these to bed.

    4. "On Her Majesty's Secret Service," Propellerheads
    9. "The Private Psychedelic Reel," Chemical Brothers
    11. "Intermission," Blur
    16. "Aerodynamic," Daft Punk

See everyone in two weeks. Cover Me will be back next week.
