Name That Tune, Game Thirty-Two

Scraps October 3, 2008 31

Hey everybody, welcome to the thirty-second knuckle-popping week of Name That Tune at Popdose. By popular acclaim, here are the rules:

The Rules:

  • MAXIMUM THREE GUESSES between updates of the list, to give everyone a chance to play. An update of the list is when I post the entire list of correct guesses with the words “OFFICIAL UPDATE”.
  • The Puzzle clip may only be guessed once between updates, but may still be guessed if you have used up your regular three guesses.
  • While I’m not going to be a stickler for spelling and punctuation, you must guess the correct musician and song title to a close approximation.

How the game is played:I have uploaded twenty-six very brief song clips. Most of the songs are well known; none of them are obscure. The clips are drawn from a variety of styles and decades. It’s likely that you’ll find a few of them instantly recognizable, while a few others you won’t know at all (but other people will, and you can’t hold it against them). There are two parts to this game. The first is guessing the songs themselves. The second part is guessing the puzzle song (clip 26). No acrostic this time. This week, the first 25 clips all have something in common that points to the identity of the Puzzle Song. Some songs may go unguessed the first time round. If songs remain unguessed after a day, I’ll provide clues and/or upload longer clips.

And here are the clips:

  1. clip 1
  2. clip 2
  3. clip 3
  4. clip 4

I suggest subscribing to the comments on the post to more easily follow the progress of the game. Remember — please! — NO MORE THAN THREE GUESSES between updates of the list. Have fun!

Track 4 is from an eponymous-but-not-debut album by an acclaimed modern singer-songwriter who died young.

Track 21 was by far the biggest career hit for this performer, and won the Grammy for best song in 1969. The writrer of the song wrote a few other big hits of the period for other people; the singer later retired to be a preacher.

Track 23 was a big doo-wop hit in 1961, and was later covered by a member of a famous family group.
