Name That Tune, Game Twenty-Nine

Hey everybody, welcome to the twenty-ninth mind-mulching week of Name That Tune at Popdose. We’ve got a few rules, but not too many:

The Rules:

  • MAXIMUM THREE GUESSES between updates of the list, to give everyone a chance to play. An update of the list is when I post the entire list of correct guesses.
  • The Puzzle clip may only be guessed once between updates, but may still be guessed if you have used up your regular three guesses.
  • While I’m not going to be a stickler for spelling and punctuation, you must guess the correct musician and song title to a close approximation.

How the game is played: I have uploaded twenty-five very brief song clips. Most of the songs are well known; none of them are obscure. The clips are drawn from a variety of styles and decades. It’s likely that you’ll find a few of them instantly recognizable, while a few others you won’t know at all (but other people will, and they’ll probably be smug about it, too). There are two parts to this game. The first is guessing the songs themselves. The second part is guessing the puzzle song (clip 25). Once again, we’re doing an acrostic game: This time, the first letter of the name of the SONG for the first 24 clips spells out a clue to the identity of the puzzle song. (And of course, if the puzzle song is guessed early, that ought to help nail down the rest of the songs.) Some songs may go unguessed the first time round. If songs remain unguessed after a day, I’ll upload longer clips.

And here are the clips:

And the Puzzle Song:
The Puzzle Song

I suggest subscribing to the comments on the post to more easily follow the progress of the game. Remember — please! — NO MORE THAN THREE GUESSES between updates of the list. Have fun, because why not?

  • Both guesses are correct, and that wraps up the game! Thanks everyone for playing the game out.

"The Show Must Go On" was an early Leo Sayer song, and while the Three Dog Night has the kind of hit-single arrangement and energy that they were so good at, they changed the crucial lyric from Sayer's original "I won't let the show go on" to "I must let the show go on", which has always ruined their version of the song for me.

"Everybody Is a Star" was the other side of "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)", which has to be in the top ten double-sided singles ever.
  • MichaelFortes
#3 is "Everybody is a Star" by Sly & the Family Stone.
  • Old_Davy
    1. Show Must Go On, The - Three Dog Night

I have no idea what #3 is but from your clue I think maybe I should. <embarrassed red face>
  • Themes from a Summer Place, Mahogany, and S.W.A.T. are all correct.

Two songs left: a top five hit cover by a band with many hit covers, and a number one hit that's one half of one of the greatest two-sided hits ever, by a band with many hits that helped invent a genre.
  • 10. Theme from S.W.A.T. - Rhythm Heritage
  • 12. Theme from Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To) - Diana Ross
  • 18. Theme from A Summer Place - Percy Faith & His Orchestra
  • 18 does feature in Animal House.

You are not, I think, crazy, but 1 is not "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" by Stevie Wonder.
  • Fred
Also, if I'm not crazy, #1 is "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" by Stevie Wonder.
  • Fred
(Drat: the one time I get to play this- because no one is around at work- and I'm stuck.)

#18 is driving me nuts; I keep thinking that it's the "make out" theme from when Marmalard and his girlfriend are parking in Animal House. Alas, no idea what that would actually be called, or who wrote it (Elmer Bernstein?)
  • This is an odd week. All the ones I thought were hard have been guessed. Of the remaining five songs, four of them were number 1 singles in the U.S., and the other peaked at number 4. Among them are two movie themes and a TV theme; one cover song; one side of a two-sided hit; a song by a two-hit wonder; and a song that was the best-selling song of the year.
  • STEVE MEANT STAGE NOT CIRCUS is the acrostic.

  • "The Great Valerio" by Richard & Linda Thompson is correct.
  • M.
#14 is "The Great Valerio" by Richard & Linda Thompson
  • It's very weird that two people nailed "Ex Lion Tamer" by Wire four minutes apart.

Arensb, I bow to few in my passion for Wire -- Chairs Missing is my favorite rock album of all time -- but you've got me beat.
  • For what it's worth, it was during one of those road-trip vacations when going there was more important than the destination. I'd already driven 1500 miles to Missouri for pie, so when I was coming back after visiting a friend in Council Bluffs, it made sense to visit 41N 93W just to avoid highways. The Wire connection was just gravy on top of that (though they do have good gravy in Iowa).
  • But what was there?
  • It's a 1-degree by 1-degree area. Even in Iowa, it contains lots of stuff, including Des Moines. But the part that I saw had a lot of farmland.

Oh, and also the smallest chapel I've ever seen.
  • I guess it does refine altitude.
  • 15: Wire, Ex Lion Tamer, from Pink Flag.

(Not that I'm a Wire fan or anything, but I once made a detour through rural Iowa, just so I could listen to Wire's song "Map Reference 41°N 93°W" at 41 degrees north, 93 degrees west.)
  • SANE
    #15 wire EX LION TAMER
  • Matthew Bolin takes the puzzle song! It is the original version of "Send in the Clowns," sung by Glynis Johns on the original Broadway soundtrack of A Little Night Music. Nicely guessed!

There are still seven regular songs to guess. Anyone want to venture the acrostic?
  • Well, the Puzzle Song is "Send in the Clowns".
There are so many damn versions of that song, but it sounds like it's probably the one most people think of nowadays, which is the one by Judy Collins. (And if it's not Judy, hopefully its the original version by Glynis Johns.)
  • "Revolution" and "Come to My Window" are both correct.
  • mrsmartin
    #21-Revolution-The Beatles
  • 19. Come to My Window - Melissa Etheridge
  • We're more than halfway through -- quick work! -- so it's time for an

Can you reveal the unguessed songs from last week? One of them drove me nuts. Thanks.
  • Jerry
Actually, it's from two weeks ago, the 8/29 game. Clip #16. I know. I'm obsessed.
  • Right, sorry about that! It was "Impulsive" by Wilson Phillips.
  • Jerry
Okay, I'm officially embarrassed - though I guess I should be proud I COULDN'T recognize a Wilson Phillips song.
  • 4) Madonna, "Vogue"
    9) John Lennon, "Nobody Told Me"
    20) Paul Davis, "I Go Crazy"

Ooh, I like the red lettering. I'll have to use that for the Cover Me quizzes...
  • Yeah, it does jump out pretty well, and still fits with the Popdose color scheme.
