Name That Tune, Game Twenty-Six

Scraps August 8, 2008 60

Hey everybody, and I mean everybody. Welcome to the twenty-sixth ganglia-gobbling week of Name That Tune at Popdose. Stop and smell the rules:

The Rules (subject to modification in future games):

  • MAXIMUM THREE GUESSES between updates of the list, to give everyone a chance to play. An update of the list is when I post the entire list of correct guesses.
  • The Puzzle clip may only be guessed once between updates, but may still be guessed if you have used up your regular three guesses.
  • While I’m not going to be a stickler for spelling and punctuation, you must guess the correct musician and song title to a close approximation.

    How the game is played:

I have uploaded thirty very brief song clips. Most of the songs are well known; none of them are obscure. The clips are drawn from a variety of styles and decades. It’s likely that you’ll find a few of them instantly recognizable, while a few others you won’t know at all (but other people will).

There are two parts to this game. The first is guessing the songs themselves. The second part is guessing the puzzle song (clip 30). No acrostic this time, just a theme: The 29 regular song clips have something in common that points toward the Puzzle Song. (And of course, if the puzzle song is guessed early, that ought to help nail down the rest of the songs.)

Some songs may go unguessed the first time round. If songs remain unguessed after a day, I’ll upload longer clips.

    And here are the clips:

12 – Album track from early 1990s power pop touchstone.

17 – Album track from early 1980s album that pioneered a genre so many years in advance that this album is still only a cult favorite.

20 – Early 1990s track by one of the biggest stars in pop music history, this song was an original song on a compilation album and was not a hit (though it should have been).

26 – Mid 1980s hit single by an R&B band far better known for their work in the 1970s.

Long clips of each of these can be found 13 comments ago.
