Name That Tune, The Final Game of 2009

David Medsker December 4, 2009 99

This will serve, for the time being anyway, as my last Name That Tune. And worse, I have yet to find a successor, but I assure you the game will live on…eventually.

Because this is the last game of the year, I have assembled a Super Karate Monkey Death Car Edition of Name That Tune, which may take days to finish. Because of the number of songs that are included this week, I’m changing the rules a little bit, so please make sure and read the rules this week before diving in. Have a happy Mellowmas, everyone, and a prosperous 2010.

The Rules:

  • MAXIMUM FIVE GUESSES between updates of the list, to give everyone a chance to play. An update of the list is when I post the entire list of correct guesses with the words “OFFICIAL UPDATE.” “Guess” is officially defined as “attempting to identify any one song.” Therefore, one comment that lists five songs counts as five guesses.
  • While I’m not going to be a stickler for spelling and punctuation, you must guess the correct musician and song title to a close approximation.

How the game is played: I have uploaded a boatload of very brief song clips. Please bear in mind that both my record collection and knowledge of music are probably 5% of that of Scraps’, so these quizzes won’t be nearly as comprehensive – or even hit-based – as his were. I will use mostly well-known songs, but I reserve the right to use something obscure if it suits my needs, like it does this week. Live versions and covers are also fair game, though I will stay away from remixes, because that’s just mean.

There is a puzzle this week, and the songs in the game will offer a (painfully obvious) clue as to the puzzle song’s identity. Ten bucks says the puzzle song is guessed within ten minutes.

And here are the clips:

    71-Yes- Owner of Lonely Heart

Really tough this week– shocked that this came out on friday..
David- whats the deal – you leaving Popdose? I really hope not :(

  • Wahoo91

    57. Oxo “Whirly Girl”

  • http://www.bullz-eye.com DavidMedsker

For the time being, yes, I'm leaving Popdose. Got a second job, and something had to give. Sadly, this is it. But I hope to be back as a pinch hitter soon.

We ran Name That Tune on Friday this week because a) the game is huge, and b) we thought that running it the Monday after a holiday would be cruel, because people would have work to do.

  • http://www.bullz-eye.com DavidMedsker

Given that Depeche Mode is still out there, I'm not sure I'd call Oingo Boingo a 'duh' band. Wait, who said that?

  • Elaine

Well I vote for clues. If you don't mind. This game is fun.

  • http://www.bullz-eye.com DavidMedsker

    Clues it is.

    7. Tom Jones covered this on his 1994 comeback album.
    26. Much like Prefab Sprout, if Paul Young sang lead.
    46. I actually know very little about this guy, except that he had this great tune in power rotation in MTV's first year. Also shares its title with a Queen song.
    51. Like, you should totally check out the soundtrack this song is on, fer sure.
    53. Boston duo, from their 2003 debut album
    54. Also from an early '80s soundtrack (released by IRS). This band also played in the party scene in the movie.
