Although I decided to avoid the show like the shingles, I give credit where it is due to Jackman who, in a strange way, is more like Old Hollywood than any of the native born. He can be both Cagney-bad-ass and Cagney-song-&-dance and even if you're thrown, you buy into it.

I had no problem with either of those actors winning. Penn's performance was moving and powerful, funny, too. We don't get to see that side of him that often. Whether Rourke got the Oscar or not, he still comes out winning because his career has been revived. He'll have better roles offered to him, that's for sure. It's up to him to choose wisely.

The “Jerry Lewis fest” was one of the quicker moments in the show, which dawdled for me. Lengths have come down since the 1999 (4:12) and 2002 (4:23) whoppers, I think even below last night's 3:25 challenge to the kidneys, but I can't find the stats.

Some Oscars linger in the memory, for better or worse; this one already seems to be evaporating. But I'll always have these Malthus-infused memories to share with the grandkids someday (“There's a story you should know, a story of a slumdog…”)

It's true about 4 of the 5 being deserving.

But Rourke's performance was one of the most honest I've seen in some time.
