Say what you want about 2012, but I just saw that for a second time this morning, while there is no way in hell I'm watching Precious or The Road again. Once was more than enough.

At least Precious had a little bit of hope to it (though they never stop kicking her). The Road was the most hopeless, joyless movie I've seen in years.

I had the unusual good (?) fortune to see Precious, 2012, and The Blind Side during a 24-hour period Friday and Saturday. Among many other amusing and devastating takeaways from this orgy of devastation and redemption, there's this:

On the way to the restroom after 2012, I encountered a woman who had been in the theater, who asked whether my son was laughing through the movie's ridiculousness as hard as I was. I responded (truthfully), "No, he kept saying, 'Shut up, dad, it's the apocalypse. It's not supposed to be funny.'"

The woman then asked what I thought of the horrors depicted in the film, and I said, "You know, the effects were pretty spectacular--but I saw Precious last night, and as devastation goes, this movie's got nothing on that one."

David_E: I don't think you'll hate THE ROAD, I just don't know if you'll get much out of it. It's not all that cathartic. (But I can see how the book would tear you up.)

DW: I was working the "prestige" side of the fence (OK, 2012's a stretch). What the hell, sue the producers, get your name in the trades.

You know, Thanksgiving is the trigger event for most peoples' seasonal depression. These movies only appear to be part of a greater depopulation conspiracy.

But I'm depressed for other reasons. Seen the trailer for Planet 51? While I have no doubt it is an original film not based on anyone else's work, the treatment I wrote (and subsequently failed to sell) back in 2002 titled “Earthlings” is a hell of a lot better.

Hmm. Been really conflicted about “The Road” as a movie. Wanted to love it, feared I'd hated. The book, I am not ashamed to say, made my cry at least a half dozen times. (Having a nine-year-old son of my own didn't help.)
