I though Chris Columbus and Barry Levinson did a really good job with Young Sherlock Holmes. Canon quality? Maybe not, but I always preferred the Basil Rathbone interpretation of the character, so YSH fit the bill fairly well. If I have any reservation of Ritchie's interpretation of it (based solely on previews,) it would be he took too much of producer Silver's coaching and make it a veddy English Lethal Weapon.

It's not like Arthur Conan Doyle was above sequels, or killing off his character and reviving him. He worked his franchise. It's on par with YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES, if you liked that. I wonder if my Holmesian dad will go for it?

In other words, the shallowness will be a turn-off for the people who are most enamored of Doyle's Holmes oeuvre. Frankly, seeing the ads made me want to run as far away from this picture as possible. At least, I will not be the guinea pig. If a real Holmes aficionado tells me it is OK, I'll pick it up on DVD when the library buys it.

The fighting was never a big part of the short stories. The trailer made it look like they were trying to turn Holmes into Indiana Jones.

An IMAX 3D theater is an “asshole auditorium”? Must be assholes with money to burn.

It would be interesting to see AVATAR in 2D, or on DVD–but it wouldn't be the same thing.

Saw it in 3D IMAX at Metreon in San Francisco (which is known as a very high auditorium asshole ratio) and I've got to say the IMAX 3D experience was eyepopping and the crowd was well-behaved.

Overall, I'd recommend seeing it in the theater.

Believe it or not, Chipmunks 2 looks to be unseating Avatar at #1 in less than one week. Of course, it's all about the running game, not the long bomb, so this may just be an early Christmas gift to the kids that gets tossed aside like so much wrapping paper… Or it could be a harbinger of hype gone wrong. We'll see. Either way, Fox produced them both, so I guess they're not too concerned.
