(The prosecutor does his job zealously, but it's hard to criticize him for doing it. It's a fairly faceted portrayal.) I'm not sure the profession needs to "justify' itself, or how it might do so for those disinclined to pick up a newspaper or magazine, but we'll be at loggerheads here. What replaces journalism if journalism is dead?

The media swims in the same murky economic waters as we all do, and for newspapers particularly it's all upstream. Our valiant embeds are a declining breed: The government doesn't want them, the news agencies can't afford to keep them, and readers haven't shown much interest in their reporting. Apathy is hardly restricted to journalists.

On a more concrete matter, Beckinsale's hotness is like the economy. She was prim and cute in the early 90s, then chesty, "enhanced," and otherwise over-inflated. I really didn't recognize her in Pearl Harbor. I like the burst-bubble incarnation more.

The movie doesn't glorify journalists, it just shows how one might react in these fictionalized circumstances. Distrust of the media may be at an all-time high. A favorite preacher opines: "Journalism is dead." Working Americans have, in the past few months, been robbed, through Federal Reserve loan programs like T.A.F, T.S.L.F., P.D.C.F., and other obscurities -- to the tune of at least $2 trillion. We have no accountability for Secretary Paulson's TARP funds. Other government promises have pushed the cost of bailouts to the $8 trillion dollar range. Not only have journalists been slow to investigate, I'm not confident that any but a tiny handful are even competent to investigate. A recent lengthy New Yorker piece on Fed chairman Bernanke provides the barest outlines of what has been done, but no details and little about the real-world consequences of these gigantic interventions. And that article is one of the best I've seen. The bailout scandal is bigger than Watergate, bigger in financial terms than the Iraq War. Congress is not demanding accountability from Treasury and the Fed, and the mainstream moron media -- the MSMM -- is not demanding that Congress demand accountability. This isn't merely an important issue, it is the only issue, because it is a fundamental alteration in the structure of our economy. Let the industry show some actual nobility, or even modest competency, before we attempt to ennoble it in fiction. End rant mode.

That said, Beckinsale is hot, and I'll try to catch Nothing But The Truth on DVD. Because, who doesn't love a good fairy story? :-

(Disclaimer: I would not apply my wrath and disdain to one class of journalists -- those brave embeds who have covered the good, bad, and ugly of the war. They put it all on the line. I respect them greatly, even if I don't always agree with their analyses.)

Have donned asbestos suit here. Fire away. :)

I may be resident crank here, but I will politely suggest that any movie attempting to glorify or justify the journalistic profession is going to fall on unsympathetic eyes here and in perhaps half or more of the country.
