[...] The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974). I write this without having seen the recent Tony Scott remake, but still — skip it and see the original instead. One thing they did really well in the ’70s was make great no-nonsense thrillers, and Joseph Sargent’s Pelham One Two Three is one of the great underrated thrillers of that decade. Plus it’s really hard to beat that funky 12-tone score by David Shire. For a great write-up on this film (along with a review of the remake), check out Bob Cashill’s No Concessions column from June 19. [...]

The original Pelham was part of that dystopian vision of early-70s films, eventually broken by Jaws and never really returned to. Flower Power wilted. The protesters weren't making any headway trying to convince anyone that Vietnam wasn't working. The original fuel crisis, the Cold War. The films of anti-heroes like Bonny and Clyde, Butch and Sundance and Dirty Harry reflected the disillusionment of the times.

We don't really ask for movies to mirror our times now. We ask them to mirror entertainments past. The new 1,2,3 is Die Hard on a Subway just as Speed was Die Hard on a Bus and that Steven Seagal movie was Die Hard on a Boat.
