I've been collecting Fantagraphics' fantastic Complete Peanuts anthology and IDW is now starting a similar series for Bloom County. I also used to love the Phantom and Prince Valiant strips even though the storylines were often drier than grandpa's tear ducts. The art was usually gorgeous, top-notch stuff.

And that's where the break was with me. Almost 20 years ago, the necessity for the comics page diminished and so did the size of the panels. It wasn't as much fun to read them because they kept getting harder and harder to read! This was a far cry from when papers ran Will Eisner's The Spirit in the late '30s and practically devoted a whole comic book section solely to him.

Besides, lately the new crop of strips has been anything but awesome. I wish it wasn't so, but what I miss has no resemblance to what currently exists.

I used to love the comic strips.
