According to Charlie Kelly, 11-21-76 was the first time the original Fairfax crowd ran a timed Bicycle race down the fire trail they called “Repack”, a competitive event that led to the development of what became the modern mountain bike. I was rocking my own modified Schwinn at the time but we developed our machines in a different style, a couple counties south-east. Our “boonie bikes” were not built for speed, as we didn’t want to wait for an ambulance to mountain-goat twenty miles up to Wauhaub Ridge due to some indiscretion.
