Phagz on 45: Episode Five

Phagz on 45

You know the deal: John C. Hughes and the world’s foremost Belinda Carlisle impersonator, a.k.a. his buddy Matty (or “Bearlinda,” if you prefer), knock back some booze and review some singles, homo style. This week your rainbeaux duo take a listen to songs by Ladytron, Sparks (again?!), the Jesus and Mary Chain, and Tommy Keene while discussing dog farts and letting “the cute count” get out of control. Plus, stay tuned to the end to see their very first SPECIAL SURPRISE GUEST (it’s someone on the review list — no lie!). Enjoy, and as always, MP3s of the songs are below so you can follow along at home.

Ladytron — “Burning Up” (download)

Sparks — “Good Morning” (download)

The Jesus and Mary Chain — “Darklands” (download)

Tommy Keene — “Places That Are Gone” (download)

Tommy Keene is awesome. I've never seen him play solo, but I did catch a set by Velvet Crush (opening for Oasis) when he was in their line-up. Do tell: why was he just casually passing through your living room?
  • Matty!
He was high and just wandered into our house - much like Robert Downey Jr used to! (Kidding - he's a Phagz fan since episode one!)
  • Speaking as someone who thinks "Ten Years After" qualifies as a true Desert Island Disc, and who has often contemplated writing a guide to Tommy Keene, this episode was the best yet. Please let Mr. Keene know that Popdose stands at the ready to help spread his gospel however it can.
  • Matty!
TK is the shit. This episode would've been better with less Sparks tho. XO!!

As someone who was a fan of Mr. Keene's back when he was still based in the Wash DC area, 'twas good to hear PTAG again. Always possessed of good taste (check the artists he's affiliated himself with), it only makes sense that he be pals with you lot as well. Best from Fogtown!
