Phagz on 45: Episode One

Phagz on 45

Today we introduce a new weekly feature on Popdose, as John C. Hughes and the world’s foremost Belinda Carlisle impersonator, a.k.a. his buddy Matty (or “Bearlinda,” if you prefer), knock back some drinks and review some singles, homo style. This week your rainbeaux duo take a listen to songs by Posh Spice, the Primitives, the Village People, the Bravery, Divine, and Edith “The Egg Lady” Massey while discussing Sporty Spice’s sexuality, beard fleas, and Brazilian slap porn. MP3s of the songs are below so you can follow along at home.

Victoria Beckham — “Should Have Known’” (download)
Divine — “You Think You’re a Man” (download)
Edith Massey — “Punks Get Off the Grass” (download)
The Primitives — “Out of Reach” (download)
Village People — “Diet” (download)
The Bravery — “This Is Not the End” (download)

Just when I think the comment about the Village People's “food trilogy” is going to give me my biggest laugh, John starts in with the VP hand jive. Awesome. But not as awesome as “Archie's Pals and Gals.”

  • Titsley LeMieux

AWESOME POST HUNNEY!!!! This is the best feature ever!!! XOXOXO, Matty

And, holy crap, a classic Zoom reference! I'm so damn old…

But I'm giving this new feature two thumbs up. These two are comic gold.

Such a hot genius combo. You had me at Brazilian slap porn. Keep it Comin'

This is awesome. Love the new series about as much as I love the food trilogy. Wait – no, you might have taken that the wrong way. I actually do love the VP food trilogy. “Food Fight” is a crazy good song.

“I was like Andrea on 'Zoom'.” Jack Daniel's shot out my nose when I heard that. Keep 'em coming, phagz.

Where IS Cathy Dennis? D-Mob's “C'mon and Get My Love” was such a good piece of fluff.

  • WHarrisBullzEye

Cathy Dennis doesn't need to sing anymore; she's a songwriter behind the scenes these days, and she's rolling in the dough as a result. (She wrote “Toxic” for Britney Spears and “Can't Get You Out Of My Head” for Kylie Minogue. 'Nuff said.)

Perhaps I misunderstand the concept. For an inaugural post, shouldn't you have had some Elton John, or Peter Allen, or at least George Michael? Or a personal favorite, Jill Sobule?

  • JohnHughes

    We're phagz, not deaf! UCH!

    (although Matty LOVES Jill Sobule)

This is a sublime feature! But John… It's Bernadette who originally did the crazy arm thing on “Zoom,” not Andrea.

  • JohnHughes

    Hey! I was drunk!

    …when I watched “Zoom” as a child

I felt like it'd been mentioned before, either here or at Jefitoblog, that Dennis has done well for herself since her singing career ended, but I didn't know she'd written those two catchy songs. Good for her.

Hahaha! And what were you drinking in the video?

  • Titsley LeMieux

LIQUID VAGINA. (aka Amaretto Sour) XO, Bearlinda (aka Matty)

  • http://www.popdose.com Zack

Yeah, good for her. No, I'm not related to her.

This is brilliant. I am truly gayer for having watched that video. Keep it up!
