If you can figure out when the "sudden destruction" of wicked persons takes place in I Thess. 5:3, and when "death" is ended in I Cor. 15:54, you will know where to place the rapture on your prophecy chart because those passages talk about the "times and seasons" (and the "when" and "then" ) of the rapture! Neat, huh?

THE BEST RAPTURE LOCATER

Guess what. However, C.S. Lewis observed a certain commonality of moral values among religions, and even among most of the non-religious and the less devout. There is a strong consensus in the US on many issues about what is right. And wrong.

If Christians have failed to advance their political agenda, it's partly because they (we) are hypocrites, and partly because the politicians we elected were even worse hypocrites. Also, we have not done a good job of advancing reasons for our positions beyond "the Bible says so." There are very practical reasons behind biblical standards, but Christian leaders and conservative politicians in particular have been either indifferent, incapable, or timid about leading a debate on the real impact on society of a departure from traditional morality. They prefer simple slogans, like Mr. Obama's, "Marriage is between a man and a woman." (That was probably a not-wholly-sincere effort to court the moral mainstream if not the minority Moral Majority.) Yes, Mr. Obama, it is. But why??? Why should it be so? We never seem to get beyond the sound bites and slogans. And Obama would never be able to answer the question without a teleprompter anyway.

The question remains whether the state has any interest in sanctioning or denying various unions, and what reasons might pertain. What are the state's interests generally? It's a vast subject. I don't care what the sound bite rhetoric may be, those are the important political questions, and at least some Christian conservatives have reasoned responses. Unfortunately, they may not be the loudest voices. What can ya do?

Being a member of a fringe sect, the Christian Right seems like a mainstream group that I don't identify with any more than you do (though strictly speaking I agree with most of their moral positions). I have left the only faith I know because of their narrow-sightedness on several issues that they moved from the pulpit to the voting booth. If they wish to remain tax exempt, they should stop preaching to their followers on political matters.

I was just thinking today that I wished the Catholic Church would just get it's nose out of trying to influence secular law.
