Popdose Contest: Win Tickets to the New American Music Union Festival

Popdose Staff July 14, 2008 17

This year’s newest music festival, the New American Music Union, takes place in Pittsburgh on August 8th and 9th — and Popdose has two tickets up for grabs!

Created by Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis and hosted by American Eagle Outfitters, New American Music Union will feature Bob Dylan & His Band, the Raconteurs, Gnarls Barkley, the Black Keys, the Roots, Spoon, and others (but not Red Hot Chili Peppers, oddly enough). Stage Two will feature 15 college bands, competing for the chance to win a recording session in LA. The whole shindig takes place in Pittsburgh’s South Side Works.

Who wouldn’t jump at the chance to see Dylan, Cee-Lo, and ?uestlove on the same stage? We thought so. So here’s your chance to win two tickets to the festival — just answer this simple trivia challenge, devised by Popdose’s own Ken Shane …

Connect Bob Dylan to Sitka, Alaska.

First person to leave the correct answer (or a correct answer) in the comments wins the tickets! Please note that this concert is only for the tickets themselves; you’re on your own for transportation and lodging.

Good luck! And check out more information on the festival here!

Sitka spruce from Alaska is the dominant wood used in acoustic guitar soundboards including the Martin guitars that Dylan has long played. Does that count? Thanks!

  • Barry

Sitka spruce for his soundboards and guitars

Plus – a recording artist named Tim O'Brien recorded his cover of Dylan's ” Farewell Angelina” on February 13, 2003 at a live show in…you guessd it, Sitka, Alaska.

  • Barry

OK, last one: The city of Sitka, Alaska is the setting for Michael Chabon's novel , “The Yiddish Policemen’s Union.” about an imaginary Jewish homeland created after WWII (instead of in Israel). And hey, Bob (Zimmerman) Dylan was born Jewish and has returned to this religion over the years….

You're closer with this last one, but no dice.

Remember, everybody, the format of this trivia question is to CONNECT “X” to “Y”, not to simply say that “X” and “Y” have “Z” (i.e. spruce, or Judaism) in common. In other words, you might need a few steps to pull this off correctly.

    I'll say no more.

Sitka Alaska was the site where novelist James Michener resided while doing research for his mammoth novel “Alaska”.

Michener also wrote the novel “South Pacific”, and appeared uncredited as a missionary in the film adaptation directed by Josh Logan.

Josh Logan later directed “Paint Your Wagon”, which starred Lee Marvin

Lee Marvin starred in Le Petit Chou, an episode of “Route 66″ directed by Sam Peckinpah

Sam Peckinpah directed Bob Dylan in “Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid”

Matthew is right in that you're actually closer to a direct connection than you realize. However, you've provided some pretty good answers, so you win the prize! Please e-mail your mailing address to jason (at) popdose dot com.

By the way, the answer we were looking for: Chabon also wrote “Wonder Boys,” which was made into a film (set in Pittsburgh) and whose soundtrack featured “Things Have Changed,” by Mr. Zimmerman.

Er, just so you know, I think the “rules” about connectivity could have been MUCH more clearly explained at the start. As it stands, I think several of the answers actually seemed to work, although not the “official” one. (That one posits the connection on 1) a fictional alternate universe version of Sitka, which is just bizarre, and 2) a film based on a novel by Chabon, in which the making of he did not directly participate. In the end, that “connection” is so loose to be non-existent, at least in my view.)

I'm not protesting Barry's win — he worked hard, and came up with several acceptable alternatives. I'm just noting that if you do this again, you should make it VERY clear exactly what the ground rules are.

Next time, instead of having a (vs. the) correct answer first, i'll try to have three answers second. Go Barry! Enjoy the tix.

    Duly noted! Thanks!

  • Barry

Wow! Excellent! I read “Wonder Boys” but never saw the film….

Bob Dylan and Van Morrison used to stay at the Woodstock Inn located on the MIlstream in Sitka Alaska many years ago. Man I wish I could have been there!

Bob Dylan plays a guitar made of Sitka spruse that comes from Alaska.

Sitka spruce is currently the dominant wood used for soundboards for acoustic guitar and pianos and much of the supply comes from Southeast Alaska.
