Both songs were staples of Fab Five Freddy-era "Yo! MTV Raps". Along with "Fear Of A Black Planet" and the 1st Tribe record, 1990 was a pretty kick-ass year for hip-hop. So much creativity!

The cassette version of the album had four extra tracks that you couldn't find on the CD. “Hip Hop Doll”, “Sound Of The Underground” etc…I bought the CD back in April '90 on the strength of “Doowutchyalike” & “The Humpty Dance”, which was just starting to catch fire at pop radio. I agree that it holds up well.

This is just an awesome way to start the weekend — I haven't heard this album in years, but I was a huge DU fan back in the day and saw them live a couple of times, so I'm enjoying the heck out of it. I was actually horrified to realize a month or so ago that I didn't have this in my collection-needless to say, I rectified that in a hurry.

I would go into my patented crochety old man rant about how hip-hop isn't very much fun anymore, but I think I've beat that one into the ground in various places.

I regret to say that I have not yet gotten busy in a Burger King bathroom. But I'm working on it.

Oh man, how I love “Sex Packets”. Let's add Blackalicious to the pile, shall we?

Musically, the Roots are peerless, but their stuff is a hell of a lot darker (and angrier). You are correct sir, Digital Underground (and De La Soul) were the sketchy party people that also knew how to get their groove on. I contend that both Sex Packets and This is an EP release are high water marks in the last revolution of Hip Hop. I feel like an old guy saying how much cooler and more enjoyable the "rap guys" used to be. Ludacris and Outkast have that vibe for sure, but I think the Roots (and J5 if they were still together) are the true torch bearers.

I am one of those that never tires of the Humpty Dance.
