We had it in Heavy rotation at the college radio station I worked on well before Nevermind was released, and we played that record out. It got many multiple spins daily on that station. Did that mean I myself owned a mythical copy? No, but I, like several other DJ's there had taped it, for sure, back when it was still legal to make a personal copy of a recording (I miss the good old days).

Now I have to agree that being a DJ at college radio from 87 through 91 perhaps put me in a unique position to hear that, and many other seminal records when they came out, but I know that we were isolated firmly in the midwestern fly-over states, and couldn't have been the only ones spinning that record. As for listener response? That is another story isn't it.

I'll somewhat echo the meteoric rise after Nevermind sentiment, but also disagree ever so slightly about Bleach not having a bit of impact for some. My first impression was that the drummer sucked and the guitarist could sort of sing. Negative Creep, however, was a stand out.

While I wasn't really cool enough to obtain Bleach before Nevermind, a friend (and speed metal/punk musician who toured the Northwest) was. Even people who didn't like the hard stuff owned that CD... And yep - all of a sudden everyone was a long-time Nirvana fanboy (yeah, right).

Good call on "Love Buzz," that's definitely one of my favorites from Bleach (which, like you, I didn't discover until AFTER hearing Nevermind). And the Bleach version of "About a Girl" is quite interesting when held next to the more-palatable-for-mainstream-audiences Unplugged version...

You're right about the Nirvana bandwagon…man, I've never seen anything take off like Nevermind.
