I think a hybrid remix of "Sky Blue" and the version from the Long Walk Home soundtrack, featuring the Blind Boys of Alabama more prominently, could have been a much better single. The only problem is that it is a ballad of sorts and record companies hate to break an album on mid-tempo songs.

"Barry" is an entirely unnecessary song. Delete it from the album and let Up be the incredible piece of work it is. Gabriel's best? Taken on the whole, I think, despite a few self-derivative moments, it's up there. The beauty of "I Grieve" and "Signal to Noise" alone....

Up wasn't a terrible record by any stretch (neither was Us, for that matter), but Jesus Christ was "The Barry Williams Show" a terrible choice for a single. In addition to just being appallingly facile, it's completely unrepresentative of the album, which is pretty quiet and sombre overall. It's a blatant, calculated stab at a pop hit - or rather, miscalculated stab - integrity be damned. Left a bad taste in my mouth, and caused me (like you) to avoid the album for years; I didn't listen to it in its entirety until last Summer, actually.

When it comes to soundtrack music, this is the kind of music I love - and Passion was definitely a favorite of mine in 1989. Passion was in high rotation on my home CD player and, for some reason, a few cuts made it to some mix tapes of that era.

I also loved the atmospheric sounds culled from his older recordings on the Birdy soundtrack, but, like most, was very disappointed in Us and pretty much avoided Up after hearing "The Barry Williams Show" on the radio.

I'm 37 years old and have been buying records since I was 5, and this is almost definitely the one I've listened to the most.

I remember buying this soundtrack when it first came out, but at the time I didn't "get" it. It has since earned a place as one of my favorite albums of all time, although I hardly listen to it anymore - I think that it takes too much out of me.

I saw Aerosmith play in support of their Nine Lives album, and they used this album as filler music before they came onstage and launched into "Sweet Taste of India".

I also read somewhere that this is the best album to listen to while, *ahem*, with the ladies, if you know what I mean.

Having had too much wine last night, this music is exactly what I need this morning. Thanks.
