Overall, every Pixies album is irritating to people I know yet I always found that pop sensibility inside it, and mostly on Doolittle. What's funny to me is that the ethic behind their sound was in many ways duplicated by Nirvana. These same people who see Pixies as just this wall of howling noise and nonsense kneel at the altar of Kurt.

That's the thing though. Some songs VERY well, "Monkey Gone To Heaven," for instance.

No doubt about it, Doolittle holds up 20 years later pretty well. But even the ones I'm not in love with now...kick the crap out of the stuff on the pop charts then...and now. That in my mind is the hallmark of a great album, whether it's my personal favorite or not.

Like it or not, the record still sounds so much better 20 years later than a lot of its contemporaries–and some of the songs I think are great and some not so much. For those not used to the Pixies ethic, it is piercingly irritating, which I also love. So in a single recording, you can polarize an entire room almost instantly.

There is a duality about Doolittle that I love.
