Jay Brown Beginner Mind CoverEverything old is new again.

Jay Brown is an artist living a kind of dual existence. On one hand, he’s a seasoned singer/songwriter, having cut his chops in bands like the Lazybirds. His experience comes through in his world-weary lyrics and simplistic style, both of which completely complement one another. But, on the other side, he conjures images of Appalachian tradition and backwoods blues and country from another generation, almost as if he’s possessed by the spirits of crooners before him. What this forms when combined is a complete package of modernity and timelessness, and a lot of heart.

In a Popdose exclusive, here is Brown’s “Childhood Friends,” from his upcoming album Beginner Mind. In it, you’ll find all the ingredients of what constitutes a quality song — days gone by; expressive musical flourishes; a rich, emotional vocal — and maybe memories of your own childhood friends, too.
