[...] Of course, the elation of the moment was short-lived. Li’l Kipper left the band after Geffen Records refused to let him appear in the video (Big Kip lip-synched the vocal and performs it live to this day). Kip Winger and Rachel Hunter carried on their romance for a while longer, but it was never the same as it was that first wild weekend, and she eventually left him to run into the leathery arms of Rod Stewart.
I may be the naive one here, but I don't see the surprise in any step of Rod's career. If you understand the man without preconcieved repulsion, than maybe you could understand the moves he took.
Rod was never a "Serious" guy like Bob Dylan, he was a lad who liked a good laugh, liquor, singing, and women. He had the same "Divo" like attitude before he was famous in 63 with Long John as he did in 79.
Rod does what he wants, he admits he is lazy , and he just wants to have a good time. Rod admits he isn't a "Songwriter" in the sense that to him it is like being in school , it isn't a favorite thing or a natural thing for him to do.
Rod has always loved flashy things, fashion, cars, women before he was famous and before 67.
Rod incorporates humor into almost anything he does. From performing, to songwriting, to interviews.

He was always a vocalist, never a Bob Dylan type....He was never that dedicated to that side of the craft. When he had people around him is when they brought it out in him.

Besides I honestly don't think there is one artist you can honestly say that you love or hate that hasn't had a bad period.

So why are people so willing to give Rod shit over it? Ain't no changing it now.

I'm an 80's collector and thus I have everything 80's from the "Shit" period of Rod Stewart. When you compare it to the other crap out at the time, Rod still sounds better than most.

This joke is only valid until the next update, but if you look at the homepage right now, the link <-----Older Entries is pointing right at Rod's craggy face.

I'd forgotten about "I Can't Deny It" -- and I'm not sure I ever knew it was an Alexander co-write -- but you're right, it was a fine pop song.

Big "When We Were the New Boys" fan here, but I also dig the Gregg Alexander co-write, "I Can't Deny It," from the otherwise sub-par "Human." I also vaguely recall "Spanner in the Works" being rather good, but I haven't heard it in ages; maybe it's time to head over to Amazon to see how cheaply I can invest in a copy...

When We Were The New Boys is pretty much the only album of new material (Unplugged doesn't count - but it's pretty fine) that I can listen to the whole way through without hitting the skip button more than once or twice. It's too bad he immediately decided that returning to a pub rock sound had been a terrible idea...
