The characters were fish out of water (the spiritual connection to the dolphin plot, as it was), not total buffoons like they would become for part Five.

Khan, on the other hand, reversed the course of the first movie which I liked, but played to its fundamental flaw - hippies in space. Although Kirk, Spock and Bones never were officially flower powered, their ideals and V-necked uniforms spoke of being loose, being free and bringing love to all the universe. Right on. Groovy. Meyer's real trick was to remind everybody this is a military vessel and certain protocol was expected on a military vessel, stuff that would have had the TV Enterprise drydocked for good if the Admiral got wind of it. "Green skinned women? Furballs? Picking up passengers unguarded? This is a spaceship, not a whorehouse!"

It does, to a degree. If we're correct, then Kirk and Picard never really left the Nexus, they just thought they did, and everyone is dead - which is a pity because First Contact was kick-ass.

But yeah, Khan is the Star Trek movie for people who ordinarily hate Star Trek movies.

Me and my cohorts could never quite get Generations. And you are absolutely correct that the Khan is more concerned with being a good SciFi romp rather than Star Trek "on the big screen".

I'm a fan of the Star Trek movies (although I have yet to see the new one) and Wrath is by far the best with Generations (to me, honestly it has everything to do with Kirk finally dying) being a good 2nd.
