Your "Collector's Edition" is what is now known as the "Director's Cut." As long as the running time is 137 minutes, it's the same thing. The cool thing about the "Ultimate Edition" is that is contains all three versions of the movie. Unfortunately there is no audio commentary track (Spielberg, to date, has never recorded one). Your DVD should also contain a lengthy documentary on the Making of CE3K which is also present on the "Ultimate Edition." Sometimes keeping track of all these different editions can drive a man to drink.

Thanks for the nice comments! Lately, it's a coin toss, but if you look into critical analysis of Jaws and CE3K, those critics tear the movies apart with nagging facts and cinematic inconsistencies. Doesn't matter one bit to me. Once Spielberg had you, he could have sprung the stupidest, Deus Ex Machina BS imaginable and it wouldn't have mattered. You were going for that ride.

Spielberg knew how to hold his audience back then. Jaws is my all-time number one favorite film of all time, then Star Wars, then Close Encounters. I remember seeing ONCE...only ONCE...the inside of the ship and I also agree that it should be left to the imagination (which is probably why I never saw that version again on TV or ANYWHERE)...much like the blessing in disguise when Bruce the shark never worked and they had to use barrels to drum up the suspense, which ended up in a far superior finished product. I would tell people about "the version that shows Roy IN the ship" and nobody believed that this particular version even existed!

I love those old movie trailers from the great movies of the 70s. The ones above with the dramatic voice-overs are priceless.

Thanks for the GREAT article! I have GOT to get me one of those special editions! My "Collector's Edition" has 11 deleted scenes, but no audio commentary or director's cut versions.

A man after my own heart.
