Song-Off Jr.: Sailing

Zac Sunderland

This week’s Song-Off is dedicated to Zac Sunderland, a California teen who’s about to become the youngest person to sail around the world solo. He departed from Marina Del Rey last year on June 14, and at this moment in time he’s near the tip of Baja California in Mexico, less than 2,000 miles away from the end of his journey. He’s estimated to arrive in port on June 25 or 26, after more than a year at sea. Congratulations, Zac!

Christopher Cross – “Sailing”

Crosby, Stills & Nash – “Wooden Ships”

Last week readers found the Posies to be the most palatable, as “Flavor of the Month” took home a clear majority of 57 percent over Black Sheep’s 22 percent and American Hi-Fi’s 20 percent. Join us again next week as we celebrate your faithful Matchup Monkey’s imminent haircut (all this hair did me little good, as I’m currently suffering from a sunburned scalp) with songs about the biblical hero Samson.

  • What's the point of voting? We already know Giles has fixed it in favor of Christopher "The Walking Chalupa" Cross.
  • The Man I Used To Be
Sail On Sailor by the Beach Boys would have been a much better choice then Sloop John B.
  • Matchup Monkey told me that he originally was planning to include Okkervil River's "John Allyn Smith Sails" which would have segued nicely into Sloop John B, but decided against it because the song isn't actually about sailing (it's about John Berryman).
  • CSN beating the Pogues? What's this world coming to?
  • Well, that particular Pogues song kind of sucks.
  • You are dead to me. DEAD!

Well, not really. But you are wrong about "Thousands Are Sailing."
  • Throwing my vote away by picking the Waterboys. Can't bring myself to vote for Cross after hearing about his "bone to pick with you" email to Lord Jefito (though I admit that's a great tune). Had "Sail On Sailor" been here instead, that would have been my winner.
