It's hard to believe it's 10 years old but I guess we're all getting older. Sigh.

When I first saw it in the theater, I remember being genuinely surprised a couple of times during the film. How often does that happen? The performances are amazing. How Chris Cooper didn't get nominated for his work in this film is beyond me.

In regard to the tracks, thank you for the Betty Carter cut. It didn't even occur to me that she was on this. I like the Annie Lennox cut as well and it was a great match for that scene in the film.

I think the film is a classic that holds up very well. As for the soundtrack, I think the tunes complement the storyline perfect. Even songs I never need hear again (on the radio, at least, and through overexposure, not because they are bad songs) - "American Woman", "All Right Now" - work great for me, here.

This movie isn't as high on my list as it was when I first saw it, but I certainly wouldn't call it over-rated. Actually, I could list you off 20 reasons why I hate it, but the only one required is Frank's attempt to kiss Lester near the end. Of COURSE the awful military guy is so cruel to his family, so militantly homophobic, so straitjacketed -- because he's in the middle of his own homosexual panic! Ugh.

Nice music, though. And Kevin Spacey was great in it (though his character is no more reminiscent of real life than any of the others). The scene in which the newly buff Lester is running to "The Seeker" is a great choice.

BTW, I've seen "All This and World War II," when I was a teenager (lo, so many years ago). You're not missing anything, and you could easily have reviewed the soundtrack without seeing the movie--it's a shapeless series of music-video-style vignettes, featuring lots of selectively colorized B&W footage that the filmmakers attempt to match to the various Beatles songs. (Guess what happens in "The End"?) In fact, if you have the double-LP (like I did when I was a kid--I think my brother has it now) you can pretty much glean the full content of the film from the still photos in the centerfold. The music is better than the film, but only slightly--the London Symphony Orchestra overwhelms all but a couple of performers, and there certainly are some odd artist-song pairings. I never saw it, but apparently one of the ads for the album/film showed Hitler wearing headphones. I'm gonna guess that if the Beatles had owned their own publishing, the whole enterprise never would have gotten off the ground--nor, for that matter, would the Bee Gees-Frampton fiasco of a couple years later.

I hate this movie.
