I'm a big NEW BATCH fan–John Glover rules in it–but its failure hobbled Dante's career, which to some extent was reliant on the patronage of producer Steven Spielberg (who now employs Michael Bay–whose TRANSFORMERS sequel is crawling with mechanized, and unfunny, gremlims.)

Well, at least the studio didn't inject the low-grade terror into the real holiday season – as you note, the film is set at Xmas but was released a safe 6 mos. earlier. Being a total scaredy-cat, I lived in fear during the summer of '84, convinced that evil mogwais were sneaking into the house and Zool was hiding in the fridge. (How did I not know that Mandel = Gizmo?!)

Is it sacreligious to admit that I liked Gremlins II a lot better than Gremlins? Maybe because it played down the blood and gore – such that it was – in favor of the slapstick comedy that Dante did so well. Having Tony Randal be the voice of the smart Gremlin was a stroke of genius.
