[...] That version of “Crying” with k.d. lang by the way, was recorded for the Jon Cryer movie Hiding Out. Luckily for you all, it’s the latest featured movie over on Popdose as part of their ongoing “Soundtrack Saturday” series. Check out the Orbison track (and the rest of the soundtrack) over here. [...]

Great to see the Hue & Cry track "I Refuse" on here. I lived in the UK in the late '80s and loved H&C; shame they never made it big in the US.

Nice one--I remember renting this a few times to get another dose of Jon Cryer after my Pretty in Pink-caused crush...I had not recalled the interesting soundtrack!

There's no minimizing Lang's abilities here. Plus, it is great that Orbison agreed to revisiting the song. There are a million ways that this could have been a disaster.

Hey Kelly, thanks for the post....it's funny, I never saw the movie when it came out, but I bought the soundtrack, at first on cassette, then on CD (mostly for the Orbison and Scarlett & Black songs)....It still is one of my fave soundtracks (as well as Bright Lights Big City from the same period), and thanks for the additional songs, they're cool!

cheers
Ern

I agree. If anybody ever wanted to question the vocal abilities of k.d. lang, all you have to do is play this version of "Crying." She truly more than holds her own with the incredible Roy Orbison. Most remakes of classic songs decades after the fact are travesties. This is not.

This Soundtrack was the only place to get the k.d. Lang /Roy orbison duet, until the posthumous King of Hearts" album. Easily worth the cost of buying the tape back then!

Very interesting post. I really dug this movie quite a bit, actually still enjoy it. Who can resist Annabeth Gish?

That PIL track is great. I actually loved most of Lydon's post-punk sound and Happy? is a very good late New Wave-ish album... It's a shame he's such a mercurial old fart.
