When my parents retired to Florida years ago, I used to ask them if they'd seen this movie or that movie. After all, they had plenty of time. The answer was always the same, "no, we'll see it when it comes on cable." My response was always incredulous. TV? How can you watch a movie on TV?

Flash forward a couple of decades, and I rarely go to movie theaters anymore, for all the reasons that you cited, and then some. If someone asks me if I've seen a certain movie, my response is, "no, I'll wait for it to come from Netflix."

I just can't deal with thoughtless people anymore. Everyone has been trained by television, and even when they're in a darkened theater, they seem to think that they're in their living room, and can behave accordingly. It ALWAYS spoils the film experience for me. You only get one chance to see something for the first time. If your experience is colored by the bad behavior of other, that experience cannot be recaptured. So yes, I do miss the big screen experience, and I'm not yet able to afford some huge flat screen for my home, but I think I see more films now, and enjoy them more, by watching them at home.

iTunes isn't killing record stores. Wal-Mart and other "big box" stores are killing record stores. Wal-Mart uses CDs as "loss leaders," luring someone into the store for the $9 Toby Keith CD. Once they're in, they'll spend $100 on other random items.

Up the food chain, iTunes is killing the CD industry (hurting Wal-Mart and its cousins). If anything, iTunes is simply beating on the comatose shell that is the record store.

"But you shouldn’t get to watch a good movie down there in hell anyway, Hitler — that would kind of defeat the purpose of the place. And now that I think about it, yelling “Fire!” in a crowded movie theater in hell would probably be ignored."

"I THOUGHT IT WAS VERY CLEAR - NO SMOKING IN THE PUBLIC AUDITORIUM! Put yourself out or we'll do it for you!"
