I don't think of Steely Dan as soft-rock guys, but I can see why they're yacht rockers because of the smooth factor. Lyrically they're not smooth at all, and they don't make smooth jazz, but their jazz-pop is certainly sleek.

Bareilles apparently wrote "Love Song" as an angry answer to record executives who said she needed a hit, a love song they could put on the radio. Once again, tension at the crossroads of art and commerce saved the day.

I know Sara Bareilles (my daughters have the CD). I like "Love Song", but it also seems like a tune that lost its iPod commercial to Feist. Besides "Nothing Is Free" has a lift to it that I don't get from tunes like "Love Song". Maybe I'm splitting hairs when it comes to "yacht rock". But to me, it's a low blow to Steely Dan to be lumped in a genre with America. I guess my "Mellow Gold" only goes so mellow.

Oh, I forgot to mention: Mead absolutely wiped the floor with Sexsmith live. It was embarrassing how much better he was.

That's good to hear about Mead. I want to think that all of those Nashville pop guys are friendly and approachable. I chickened out on approaching Tashian and asking about "The Lovetest," but he was right there in the crowd before the show talking to people.

In that interview with Puremusic.com, Tashian said that he didn't own the rights to the "Lovetest" songs for a while, but now he does, which may be why they're no longer available on his blog. That may also mean an actual album release is in the works.

"As great as the New Radical's 'You Get What You Give' is, I don't think it would be a hit today."

When that song was discussed in Scott's Basement Songs column a few months ago (I linked to it above), I made a comment about the end of the song, where Gregg Alexander takes some shots at then-current pop stars, as being a letdown, because the rest of the song is so great, so why is he instantly dating the song with those references? Someone who commented under the name of "oldradical" replied that those references probably helped New Radicals and "You Get What You Give" get on the radio and MTV in the first place -- they courted cheap controversy, creating buzz for themselves. Maybe that was Alexander's way of subversively commenting on the state of radio and MTV in 1998, but it's hard to say.

I'll have to look for that one. Thanks, David. I really liked Mraz's "The Remedy" when it was on the radio five years ago, and it had some soft-rock flourishes in it.

Love High Society, fabulous little record. Thanks for posting the other stuff from their singer.

Funny you should mention Schuba's and David Mead: I saw Mead open for Ron Sexsmith at Schuba's, then drank with him until two in the morning. Great guy.

And whether or not it becomes a hit, Jason Mraz's new-ish single ("Make It Mine") is *straight* outta Seventies soft rock, rolled in flour and breaded with some Josh Rouse-y goodness ...
