I meant to reply to this comment near the end of January. A few days after I wrote this post, I heard Sarah Posner on "The Bob Edwards Show" on NPR discussing her book "God's Profits":

http://www.p3books.com/books/godsprofits/

I was going to piece together the notes I wrote down after the interview was over and write a response here, but I forgot, and now it's two months later and I don't remember what my notes meant, so here they are as written down on a Post-It note back in late January:

Paul Crouch — gay affair
TBN — Praise-a-thon
private jet — Benny Hinn
$300M in assets
"Give me your grocery money before you buy food."
LA Times exposé on TBN
abusing tax-exempt status to take donations and spend on luxuries

I do remember Posner saying that Hinn has asked his followers to make donations so he can in turn make payments on his jet and fly over to Africa to save the people there before the end of days.
Wow, that hair. Tom Snyder should have taken lessons from that guy. You could break a champagne bottle over the prow of that hair.

I like Senator Grassley and all -- he's my Senator -- but what business does the government have in investigating faith claims? I wouldn't give Hinn or Copeland the time of day, but have they really defrauded anyone? So many states are in the casino or lottery business now, they are just as guilty of selling false hopes and destroying the lives of people addicted to such things --- phony religion or slot machines, what's the diff?

You want to really make a deal with God? Follow Him, and you will probably be maligned, ridiculed, abused, and if you actually start helping people, they might even hang you on a tree. Probably not too many want to sign up for that. Shall we say, it doesn't appeal to a big demographic. The message doesn't get good ratings either.

Benny Hinn would be hilarious if he wasn't so scary. Have you seen his healing services, or what I call his "Headbutts To Heaven" - In some cases, the respondent won't fall over nicely when "The power of Christ compels them" and he virtually shoves them over by their foreheads.
