I have to credit this Idiot's Guide with being the reason why I like Tom Waits. I never "got" him before I read this and heard these songs.

Nice history. You missed, however, the 'collaboration' with Gavin Bryars: "Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet", an astonishing piece of work, even without Mr. Waits' contribution.

You might be interested in our Tom Waits special we did on The Waiting Room radio, called The WAITSing Room :o)

http://crack.podbean.com

I don't have "Orphans..." yet. My financial situation being as it is, I'm not sure when I'll be able to pick it up. Great track-listing, including that version of "Sea of Love" and alot of other compilation songs. Amazing, my name is a blog tag!

Thanks for this! My first introduction to Tom Waits was in film class in University. We were watching Nicholas Roeg's Bad Timing: A Sensual Obsession and Invitations to the Blue is the opening song... I found out who the singer was and went in search of his stuff...

Turns out my roommate had a ton of his stuff on cassette (this was in the late 80s) and I started to listen to as much as I could...

When my wife and I were married, we danced our first dance to... Innocent When You Dream.

Great post. Glad you 'replayed' it. I too think you nailed each album, with one exception--I think you missed how damn good One from the Heart is. I find it listenable almost straight thru every time. What if Crystal Gayle had sung stuff like this instead of the schlock country she was known for!

I have to admit to even liking the movie, but I did want them to shut up on screen while Tom and Crystal were singing the dialogue of what was really going on!

I came into the Waits world at Rain Dogs, too, like onebrownjeff, and what a place to dip in. It's a masterpiece, as you note. Great story, seeing Lucinda watching Tom do his thing!

Thanks, man.

Brad

As challenging as it was, I think you hit the nail on the head on every album. For me, Mule Variations, would've been the toughest to pick only two songs from. Thanks for the Night on Earth cut. Supremely bitchin'!
