The Friday Mixtape: 10/22/10 — Peace and Love

Michael Fortes October 22, 2010 21

“Don’t Give Up on Peace and Love”

You can’t have peace without love (though love has certainly flourished in times when peace was at a loss). The two were meant to be together, and all through history music has reflected our tendency to celebrate and long for both. In fact, somebody out there is longing for one or both, right at this very moment.

In terms of history, these twenty songs span only a small blip of our recent times, from 1959 to the present day. And they cover both the peace of our inner worlds and of our world as a whole, as well as the many different flavors of love – brotherly/sisterly, sensual/erotic, romantic, platonic, spiritual…

All of these songs mean something different to me, personally. For whatever reason, they came together in this mix quite spontaneously and naturally, on a whim, inspired by the most unusual journey in the direction of romantic love that I have ever experienced. It was special and remarkable in its own way, just as each of these songs is. Though the content of the songs more often than not has little to do with the specific experience to which I just referred, they all happened to fit together just as well as those two magical words always will.

May this mix help to bring a little more peace and love into your life.

That John McLaughlin track is hypnotic. Thanks!

    where’s ringo?

  • Anonymous

You’re welcome! McLaughlin does have that hypnotic quality in quite a few of his tracks, which I love.

Ha! I was actually wondering that myself after I finished putting the mix together. I dabbled with the idea of dropping his cover of “Sure to Fall (In Love With You)” in there somewhere, but in the end I thought it would have been too cute, and “cute” wasn’t what I was going for. But I think Ringo is actually playing some drums on George Harrison’s “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)” and he was around for Paul’s Pipes of Peace sessions that yielded “Through Our Love” even if he’s not on the track itself. So in spirit and in sound, he is certainly around.

  • Old_Davy

If “cute” isn’t what you were going for, then I guess I can forgive you for leaving off Fountains of Wayne’s “Peace And Love”.

…and I thank you for your forgiveness, for in all honesty, Fountains of Wayne have hardly been on my radar since “Radiation Vibe.” I dug ‘em for a quick second though.

Great stuff, but one comment…how could you possibly have all 3 Beatles and exclude Ringo from the list when his motto and entire presence revolves around the “Peace & Love” theme? Just an oversight, I’m sure.

Love the demo of “Peace In Our Time!”

See my response to drcastrato above. Glad you’re enjoying the mix!

It’s even better than the finished version, don’t you think? It’s a crime that all those double CD Elvis Costello reissues are out of print now. In the case of Goodbye Cruel World, the bonus disc was even more enjoyable than the actual album.

I had most of the original Columbia CDs and wound up passing on all the Rhino remasters beside Brutal Youth, Mighty Like A Rose and This Year’s Model. Now I wish I hadn’t. Who knew Costello would take the collection over to yet another mega-label?

I liked parts of Goodbye Cruel World, but I wish Costello would release an album of demos soon. Every time I’ve heard one, they’ve been gems.

Hey! You forgot Fountains of Wayne Peace and Love!

    Peace and love
    Peace and love
That’s all I’m thinking of baby
    Peace and love

Riding around in a Volkswagen van
Thinking ’bout the people upside-down in Japan
Staring at the stars in a distant galaxy
Wondering if there’s someone out there staring back at me singing

    Peace and love
    Peace and love
That’s all I’m thinking of baby
    Peace and love

Lying on the floor just playing my guitar
Trying to find the chords for “Just The Way You Are”
Plane crash flashing on my TV
Well it could have been you, baby
    It could have been me

    We’ll never live forever
But baby things could be worse
Cause when we get together we are one with the Universe

Sometimes I think I might just move up to Vermont
Open a bookstore or a vegan restaurant
Got crazy karma, never harmed a single soul
So if you want to join me then together we’ll grow old singing

    Peace and love
    Peace and love
That’s all I’m thinking of baby
    Peace and love
