The Friday Mixtape: 10/8/10 (John Lennon Edition)

Rob Smith October 8, 2010 10

Deep in the darkest night
I send out a prayer to you
Now in the world of light
Where the spirit free of lies
And all else that we despised …

Finally! A Friday Mixtape that doesn’t suck! There’s no silly pop songs or 80′s new wave garbage. Thanks!!

Me, I like the silly pop and the 80s new wave. But this is also unquestionably cool.

Terrific! I did how much solo-era stuff you put on here. Can’t wait to listen to it all. Thanks.

(Not that there hasn’t been lots of other Friday Mixtape stuff I’ve dug!)

Funnily enough, I was just listening to Frankie Miller’s version of “Jealous Guy” last week (I think I even mentioned this on twitter), and noting how much Chris Robinson seemed to take inspiration from Miller’s singing style – compare Miller’s vocals to Robinson’s on the Crowes’ version of the same song:

Thanks, breadalbane. I’d challenge the previous commenter, but I make a point of not arguing with people named Dumpsterbaby. :^)

Good ear, Thierry. I think you’re right.

Congrats on winning the Mumiy Troll EP, too.

I think you’ll enjoy it. I’m particularly fond of the Ian McNabb, the Fats Domino, and the Colin James. And the Alison Crowe makes me teary. I’m a wuss that way.

Yeah, I’d always made the lazy Chris Robinson/Rod Stewart comparison, until I picked up the Frankie Miller Band’s The Rock in a dollar bin (largely on the strength of the awesome hat Miller wears on every picture on the sleeve http://thehelplessdancer.files.wordpress.com/2009/10/the-rock.jpg ) – and now I can’t help but wonder if Robinson has some of Miller’s LPs in his collection…

Thanks again for the EP – funnily enough, they played no more than 5 minutes away from my house in August (if only that “Can’t Say No” column had run a couple of months earlier!).

I first heard him sing with Bonnie Tyler on an awesome ballad on Faster than the Speed of Night called “Tears.” Forgot about him for years. Recently have trolled around the Web finding bits and pieces of his music.

    That is a cool hat.
