The Friday Mixtape: 6/12/09

cog-out1

Editor’s note: This week’s mixtape has an inordinate amount of song edits. While the prog purists who prefer the full-length epics might take offense, we simply cannot post 12-or-so tunes at 13-plus minutes apiece (and two songs clocking in at a half hour each). We hope you’ll understand why we’ve done as we’ve done and then show your support to the bands below by buying their albums.

10cc – Une Nuit a Paris from The Original Soundtrack (1975)
Transatlantic – Duel With the Devil from Bridge Across Forever (2001)
Frost* – Milliontown (Ballad Edit) from Milliontown (2006)
Dream Theater – Finally Free from Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From a Memory (1999)
Kerry Livgren featuring David Pack – Ground Zero from Seeds of Change (1980)
GTR – When the Heart Rules the Mind from GTR (1986)
Fates Warning – A Pleasant Shade of Gray Part Six from A Pleasant Shade of Gray (1997)
Emerson, Lake & Palmer – Take a Pebble from Emerson, Lake & Palmer (1970)
Fish – A Gentleman’s Excuse Me from Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors (1989)
Genesis – Fading Lights from We Can’t Dance (1991)
King Crimson – Model Man from Three of a Perfect Pair: 30th Anniversary (1984)
Marillion – Whatever Is Wrong With You from Vol. 2—Happiness Is the Road: The Hard Shoulder (2008)
Wetton Downes – Let Me Go from Icon (2005)
Yes – Soon (from The Gates Of Delirium) from Relayer (1974)

  • Were the edits previously existing or did you make them?
  • Yup, my fault, so if you think the shortened versions lack a little something-something, that's on me.

Marillion and Fish... nice touch. Might want to take something for the prog blockage, though.
  • I probably should have thrown up a Peter Gabriel too, to bookend the Genesis but, in a way, Hackett in GTR does that as well.

    Marillion - Yay!
    Fish - Yay!
    Fates Warning/Dream Theater/Livgren...Yay!

And these 'yays' are from a power pop fan!

Transatlantic - a prog supergroup that actually makes great albums! I assume you are familiar with their first one, "SMPTe", which I prefer over "Bridge Across Forever"? But talk about a band that milks it for all they've got. Remixes, live albums and special editions galore. I just heard SMPTe will be reissued in two weeks but I'm not sure what the difference will be other than a simple remaster.
  • It's a matter of reintroducing the band to the prog world. They're back in the studio and will have a brand new album out by the end of the year. I'm psyched!

It bothered me to take the hatchet to "Duel With The Devil" - I love the way the original half-hour version builds, but there was no way I was putting up a half-hour song. A smarter man would have just not bothered with Transatlantic in that case. Now you know something damning about me.

Seems we're groovin' on the same genre this week! I have to admit to not knowing much about Marillion, but after hearing "Whatever Is Wrong With You," I don't think they sound like Sylvan -- and someone said on the Mix Six comments thread. Maybe on other songs they do, but not this one.
  • When I saw your Mix Six earlier this week, I thought, "Cool! Theme week!" Yes hasn't had this much exposure on Popdose since, well, EVER.

"Whatever..." is off the new album Happiness Is The Road and is rockier than their usual sound, so the Sylvan comparison really isn't that far off the mark.

I already mentioned Transatlantic is working on an album set for winter release, but Marillion is going back into the studio for an all-acoustic album reinterpreting their older songs. Porcupine Tree is now on Roadrunner Records (Big mistake, Atlantic!) and their upcoming The Incident is set for fall. Frost* has a live album coming from their RosFest appearance from a month or so ago. Wetton Downes' Icon 3 just came out and Dream Theater's Black Clouds And Silver Linings is coming in two weeks.

Phew! Keeping up my reign as Mr. TMI is TOUGH!
  • Don't forget my bit on Yes' "Rhythm of Love" for White Label Wednesday, and I plan on picking something from Drama for Pop Goes the World. I just can't decide which song, though I'm taking a long look at "Machine Messiah"...
  • Go for "Into The Lens" and you can also cover Horn & Downes' version as the Buggles, "I Am A Camera"
  • That'd be great, if I had "I Am a Camera."

You want? I have. Say word.
  • Thanks, but I snagged it last night from a, um, Russian friend of mine. He had the 12" mix, too. :)
  • Ted
Holy crap, Dw! With that list, you have a new feature: "Dw's Prog World"
  • Are you actively trying to get Jeff to shoot me in the head?
  • Ted
If he tries, just say "Ni!"
  • But what if he produces a very nice shrubbery? Then I will have no recourse but to cower in the shadow of my oppressive nerdliness! I am undone!!
