The Friday Mixtape: 8/6/10 — Fake Band Edition

All the songs on this mixtape are either performed by fictional musical acts or fictional characters performing as a musical act. I apologize that the sound isn’t better on some of these selections; many of them haven’t been released on CD, so I used the best source material I had. Also, as a special treat (or possibly a special threat), the last song on this mixtape, the Plaids’ “Perfidia,” features yours truly singing lead! Enjoy!

The Three Oranges – Oranges Smoranges
Serena – I’ll Blow You a Kiss in the Wind
Conroy Bumpus – King of the Creatures
The Mosquitoes – You Need Us
Lenny and the Squigtones – Night After Night
Rock Roll – Bedrock Twitch
The Wonders – That Thing You Do!
Brady Bunch Kids – Keep On
The Archies – Bang-Shang-A-Lang
Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem – Can You Picture That
Lancelot Link and the Evolution Revolution – Rollin’ in the Clover
Jet Screamer – Eep Opp Ork Ah Ah
The Banana Splits – I Enjoy Being A Boy (In Love With You)
Dr. Thad and the Medications – The Ten Commandments of Health
United Servo Academy Men’s Chorus – United Servo Academy Men’s Chorus Hymn
The Plaids – Perfidia

Love it! But I gotta ask…where are the Monkees and Josie?

  • http://www.hemisphire.com hemisphire

    Or Stillwater?

  • David_E

    Or Milli Vanilli? Ba-ZING!

  • Jeff

“Eep Opp Ork Ah-Ah” is from a “Jetsons” episode that shamelessly steals the story line from “Bye Bye Birdie.” Jet Screamer = Conrad Birdie.

  • Jeff

“I'll Blow You A Kiss In The Wind” was written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, who also appeared on “Bewitched.” As did Phil Spector. It is so wrong that I know this. I watched way too much TV as a kid.

  • Ej79'

Redd Kross did a great version of that Bewitched tune

You mean like the Flintstones is to The Honeymooners?

  • jamesballenger

I can proudly admit amongst fellow Music freaks that I had the 45 of Bang Shang a Lang. Granted it was a hand me down and I was 6 but good lord was that some sugary sweet pop tunage. Good Mix

    Don't forget the Tap!

Ooh, good one! I think that we all have to talk Tony into a Part II

And for Chrissake, where are the Barbusters?

    “Night After Night” is ACES.

Sam & Max and Liverpudlian country music FTW!

  • Here

Where did you get the “United Servo Academy Men’s Chorus Hymn” from? It's not from the listed Bubblegum Classics vol 3, and it's not on the Clowns in the Sky CDs.

Nothing from Pop? Now I'm sad. Pop goes my heart. Also you need some Dewey Cox.

  • http://www.kenshane.com kshane

Tony it sounds like you have the makings for a couple more of these.

  • wayoutjunk

I'm not sure why the track listed as being from “Bubblegum Classics Vol. 3″. I noticed that sometimes the program I used to copy these tracks either used a previous album title or just took a guess.

No, unfortunately the USAMC Hymn isn't on either of the other CDs you mentioned. (I know because I have them both.) I just took the audio from the episode that skit came from (“The Starfighters”). That was all the more reason, I thought, to make the track available however I could.

And I'm putting my vote in for Major Happy's Up And Coming Once Upon A Good Time Band.

The Turtles did a whole album of fake band songs. I think at least one should be represented.I think my favorite on that album, apart from the hit songs, is Buzzsaw. I forgot which fake band played it.

I love the Oneders song. That's pronounced OH-NEE-DERS, haha. Do you happen to know who the musicians are on that one?

  • kingofgrief

Are you sure you're not thinking of I Dream of Jeannie? Unless they appeared on both, which is plausible. I've seen the Jeannie episode at least.

  • kingofgrief

I rewatched The Starfighters just this past week. I'd wager that the USAMC Hymn sketch was one of the most labor-intensive in the MST3K canon, from Kevin's multi-tracking to the “lip-syncing” of the choristers. And they did an awesome job, of course. Don your best poopy suit and enjoy.

BTW, Tony, do you own this?

  • kingofgrief

    Have they arrived?

  • kingofgrief

I had that 45 in my single digits as well, also in second-hand form. With “Truck Driver” on the flip.

Yes, and to prove it, they're here.

  • http://www.popdose.com DwDunphy

I know is was written by Mike Viola and Adam Schlesinger (Fountains Of Wayne), and Viola is the lead vocalist. The rest of the band is probably a mash between FoW and the Candy Butchers.

Nuts. We missed Sexual Chocolate too.

  • wayoutjunk

I went to the first MST3k ConventioConExpoFestARama in Minneapolis, and they still had a few of the chorus members in the lobby. Some were missing heads because they used them for other Tom Servos.

I don't have the Encyclopedia Rockbandica yet, but our library has a copy. I really ought to get one, considering some of them are going as cheap as a penny!

  • wayoutjunk

I have that Turtles album somewhere. I think my favorite song on there was the one about King Kumonawannalaya and the Wild Macadamia Nuts.

    Tony

  • Jeff

Yes, I was wrong about Phil Spector. He was on “I Dream Of Jeannie,” not “Bewitched.” But I believe Boyce and Hart appeared on both shows.

  • Jeff

    Indeed.

  • Kar

I think that the Banana Splits were lip-syncing

    And DuJour. Or 2ge+her.

  • Lesetchka

No Groovie Ghoulies? I can email you two tracks if you'd like, I pulled them from the cartoon itself back when I could still rip MP3s off of youtube
