The Friday Mixtape: 9/3/10 — Unpopular Pop

David Medsker September 3, 2010 11

If someone asks me what kind of music I listen to, I’ll give them the simple answer: modern rock. The truth, though, is a little more complicated than that (ain’t it always the way), in that the vast majority of the bands I’ve loved over the years — particularly in the last six years or so — are what one would call unpopular pop. These are pop songs, no question; they’re just pop songs that weren’t popular. Too alt for Top 40 radio? Too pop for alt radio? Poor representation by their label? Who the hell knows. The bottom line is that the people who made these songs thought they would be huge, and they’re not, or at least not yet, anyway. Several of these bands have only made one album to date. Maybe the next one will do the trick.

But probably not.

Rock Kills Kid – Run Like Hell from the album Are You Nervous? (2006)
World Leader Pretend – Bang Theory from the album Punches (2005)
The Lodger – Kicking Sand from the album Grown-Ups (2007)
Charlotte Sometimes – This Is Only for Now from the album Waves and the Both of Us (2008)
Cash Cash – Two Days Old from the album Take It to the Floor (2008)
Bis – Dead Wrestlers from the album Music for a Stranger World (2000)
Prozzak – Sucks to Be You from the album Hot Show (1999)
The Other Ones – Losing It from the album The Other Ones (1986)
Kenna – New Sacred Cow from the album New Sacred Cow (2003)
Rob Dickinson – My Name Is Love from the album Fresh Wine for the Horses (2005)
The Hours – Come On from the album See the Light (2009)
Delays – Nearer Than Heaven from the album Faded Seaside Glamour (2004)
Republic Tigers – Buildings and Mountains from the album Keep Color (2008)
Kerli – Fragile from the album Love Is Dead (2008)
Venus Hum – Birds and Fishes from the album Colors in the Wheel (2006)

It’s been a long time since that Rob Dickinson album. I always hoped he’d reform the Catherine Wheel but, alas.

Instead, he sang a couple tracks on BT’s latest album. Huh.

So it was BT? I was under the impression it was Armin Van Helden. I’ll have to check that out.

I always feel weird and semi ashamed that the music I like isn’t usually whats on the charts. Maybe if record companies would actually promote something that’s not rap (gag) or lady gaga (ok but overexposed) for once I wouldn’t feel this way. Once I blasted the Lightning Seeds from my car and some guy and his kid crossing the street gave me the world’s dirtiest look. Maybe it was the first time they ever heard music with an actual melody in it.

You shouldn’t feel ashamed about such things. You probably got a dirty look because of the volume, not the content.

I can’t be bothered with just listening to what’s popular. It’s far too narrow stylistically and it seems, now more than any previous time, that songs mostly tend to sound the same. The artists are following way too many of the same formats, trends and styles (and here I thought auto-tune was supposed to be dead!)

Don’t ever feel ashamed for blasting the Lightning Seeds. They rule.

I think Bis are immortalized forever during the closing credits of The Powerpuff Girls. Within the contemporary definition of musical success, that qualifies as a hit.

The Delays are actually quite big here in Mexico. They do not play huge stadiums, but get quite a share of radio airplay actually.

Good to hear. Their biggest exposure here was a diamond commercial.

I remember in 1986/87 when “Holiday” by The Other Ones was kind of popular on MTV. I couldn’t stand that song, but really loved “We Are What We Are.” I only bought the single, so I’m really unfamiliar with the other songs on their debut. But “Losing It” kind of sounds like a song The Thompson Twins would do.
