The tracks you featured from "L Is for Lover," along with the title track that John Hughes provided, are great. I'll have to buy this album. (I already know that the leadoff track, "Tell Me What I Gotta Do," is worth owning.)

[...] Jarreau is the name of Al Jarreau’s 1983 album. It’s a simple, straightforward title, but if you ask me, it’s missing an exclamation point at the end — the multigenre Grammy winner puts such joy and excitement into his performances that it’s hard not to feel as giddy as he does.
Right there with you, Joe -- my first cassette was George Benson's "Breezin'." I was 11 at the time.

Maybe it's just me, but I have trouble with the download of Lost And Found. The "save as" directory window immediately pops up, but once I start the DL it immediately aborts and there is no file.

No matter. This retrospective is really a treasure. I lost track of Al after Tenderness, and haven't heard anything from his first two albums either.

LOVE Al Jarreau. Me and my friends argued if Al was the whitest black man or the blackest white man. Either way,he's great.

I think you've touched on one of the reasons I'm so proud to be a part of this site. The Grand Poobahs of Popdose really are focused on the entire spectrum of pop culture, not JUST the indie rock side or the 70s/80s rock side or the political side. I'm hoping that, as time goes on, people will automatically gravitate to Popdose figuring, "Of course they'll have something along those lines..."

This is the most fun collection of reviews I've ever read re: Jarreau that I didn't write ;-) You nailed the reason I am such a big fan right at the end. I work for cluster of radio stations that all have formats from the 60s-80s and the amount of artists who pass through here riding old songs with nothing new or creative in sight is amazing and depressing. Al is growing artistically instead of growing old. It defies tradition and stereotype but it can be done.

Thanks for writing this. It makes me feel less guilty for going through what I believed was an inexplicable Jarreau faze back in the late 80's. I was only like 13 or so and for some reason decided I needed to listen to some Jarreau and Freddie Jackson. My classic-rock loving dad was certainly confused. I remember having the 'Live in London' tape and thinking Raging Waters was about the most thundering song I could imagine.

2 other things that stuck out to me....I love the outfil he's wearing on the "Breakin' Away" cover and I'm confused by who's in the other car on the "L is for Lover" cover. Is that a man or woman? At first glance it looked like Harry Connick Jr.
