To really appreciate the impact of The Pogues: you need to get a copy of 'Live for Ireland' when they played The Dubliners classic 'Dirty Old Town'. You really get the feel for the tear gas and rubber bullets as the first few strains of that ditty start...............

Isn't that a beauty? So much better than the version with Sinéad O' Connor that's on MacGowan's solo record.

I don't know why, to be honest. Maybe it's out of deference to MacGowan, maybe out of deference to Strummer's estate or his memory; for all his rock 'n' roll bluster, Joe was a pretty humble guy when it comes down to it.

For that matter, it might be that the Strummer period represents about six months out of a 25-year history. It was a brilliant fluke, but a fluke for all that.

Anyone who has never belted out Pogues tunes while drinking cheap beer with a few drinking buddies in a dingy apartment has missed out on one of the finer experiences that life has to offer. Waltzing Matilda is one of the most heartbreaking songs I've ever heard - thanks for posting it.

Nice overview. I just looked at the track list to the new boxed set. Question: Do you think the reason they didn't just make one of the discs an entire Pogues and Joe Strummer show in deference to Shane? Because three measly songs from the show, two of them Clash numbers, is just a tease. I'd think a 2-disc release of a Strummer/Pogues show would be a worthwhile seller for all involved. Maybe in another five years. Surely they have access to the same high-quality boots of the shows that have been on the web forever. Why not clean one up and slap and make it an official release?
